"scholarly" editions of PD books are obviously well worth paying for, for the introduction, footnotes, etc; that's why I have a bookshelf full of "Penguin Classics" editions at home.

I agree that better translation and footnotes would be worth paying for.

However, how do I find out information such as how many translations there are, how do these translation compare to each other, which is generally regarded as the best version etc?

Well, I suppose one argument in favour of an Amazon download is that the book will be instantly delivered direct to your Kindle. I don't value that myself, but some people might.

Personally, I would go for the nicely hand-crafted version every time - for example, Harry, your recently-uploaded Edgar Wallace stories, which are perfectly formatted and (as far as I can see) error-free, for which I thank you.
