I'd be all over this if it were $150.

Does the Newspaper Direct service operate over the 3G connection? And will this version include the dictionary that was demonstrated during the Press Conference last fall?

The present firmware version does not have dictionary, annotation, or zoom.

The newspapers on the DR1000 are handled by PressReader which comes from NewsPapersDirect. I assume it's the same on the DR800.

Annotation and zoom were not expected, but why on earth would they remove the dictionary function that they demonstrated earlier? Who on earth is going to by a reader for this price when its competitors have more features and, in the case of the Kindle and the Nook, a lower price?

The version of the manual that was submitted to the FCC has dictionary functionality in it, but the initial version being sold does not appear to. I'm guessing it's either not quite ready yet, or something came up in final testing and they had to pull it. They haven't said whether or not it's going to be added back in.

The IREX forums here confirm that orders have already been placed with the knowledge that certain features aren't present.

There's a lot more to a reader than annotation, zoom, and dictionary. Sure, those are important to some people, but not to everyone. Other people have different requirements that this device may fit better than either the Kindle or the Nook.

iRex 800 is slightly "whiter" than iRex iLiad.

Price, yes. If it's $400 in US, then usually it's kind of Eur 400 or more here in europe. Nominal price is often the same and sometimes (like in this case) more than $$$ :-(

Wish I was back in the US

I have a Generation 1 which I find a bit dark. It's OK in good light but I like to read in the winter evenings while my wife likes to watch tv. She likes the lights not too bright for TV viewing. that's OK for regular book reading but the Iliad is a bit dark under these lighting conditions

Who is paying Verizon for the 3G on the DR800SG? IRex? B and N? Has there been any guarantee as to the lifetime of this service? B and N probably won't be going down any time soon, but I don't know how long IRex will be committed to US market. I'd hate to buy something and then have one of its main features remotely disabled.

My $0.02.

The 800 looks like it may be a good fit for me. I like the size: 8" without a lot of margins around the screen.

It looks like it has some nice functionality, like customization of margins.

But the main thing that nags me is there is only one button to turn pages. On my 505, I like (and use frequently) the buttons on both sides. If they implemneted full 90, 180, and 270 rotation, then I think the flip bar looks like a good choice, otherwise, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?

The other minor annoyance is that there is no slot for the pen.

what I find puzzling is the US version with 3G is $200 less than the non-3G version outside the US ($399 vs $599). $200 more without the cost of the 3G solution and no apparent subsidy from a data plan to move the price down. Even if you live outside the US you would get someone to buy one at bestbuy.com and ship it to you to save the extra $200.

A note on dictionaries, including one lowers the import duties on the product.
