Right-but they could have just hard-encoded the content in .FLV, like Youtube originally did. Instead, they separated the player from the content, giving them more flexibility down the road.

I think it's silly to suggest that Hulu should suddenly drop Flash completely and move wholesale to HTML5. It makes perfect sense for them to start doing test rollouts, though (like YouTube is doing), and the iPad/iPhone is an ideal proving ground for that kind of thing.

I'd note that not all that long ago, it was virtually inconceivable that RealPlayer wouldn't be the de facto standard for streaming web media for the foreseeable future. Technology marches on, and the roadside is littered with the mutilated bodies of once-ubiquitous quasi-standards.

and it's a good thing too or we'd be watching 80 column ascii art. your realplayer comment made me chuckle. i had all but forgotten about them, never could stand their poor excuse for video and clunky players. interestingly, real networks is spinning off their somewhat successful rhapsody music service so they can focus on real player again. shudder. i for one hope that never comes back.
