Latest FineReader has an option to OCR digicam photos too.

Well, if this software will take care of any variance in my shot angles, then just a holder for the book and a tripod for the camera would probably suffice.
![]() I do still think doing a whole book would be a pain, but perhaps not as much of a pain as a conventional scanner .... ![]() |

You could effectively rig your own scanner with a sheet of glass or plastic and a camera mount, I suppose. I'm not sure what advantage that would have over any other solution, other than for those who own a camera and don't own a scanner.

I was thinking maybe two panes of plastic (or something) fit together in a V-shape, so that the book could rest its pages against them and the pic could be snapped from 'inside' the V....
It would ease the stress on the binding, I s'pose. ![]() |

Yeah... I guess. Say you go for a 60 degree angle between the panes. You could either rig two cameras, and alternate which one you shoot with, so you don't have to keep repositioning the camera, or shoot all the odd pages, then all the even pages. (Or make a fancy track that would reposition the camera between each shot, I guess.)
It still needs some kind of LEGO-on-steroids robotics to tilt the book back and turn the pages between shots. ![]() |

Years ago (read early 1970s) I copied a section of one of the oldest printed books (about 20 years after Gutenberg) as part of a summer intern job. We used a view camera and simply laid a glass pane on top of each page and rotated the mount to provide for the 180 degree angle. A little darkroom magic and the results were stunning.

Sony sells that cute little robot. Maybe they could teach it/he/she to hold the book, snap the pictures and turn the pages. And since it's Sony, it/he/she could be one of our six devices.

Abbyy FineReader: It might be a useful tool, if your only option is to have OCR - but as far as I could tell from the Trial I just downloaded, it fits another purpose than Snapter.
FineReader: Allows importing of pictures (Scanner, Digital Camera) and just does OCR on it -> result is OCRed text, but does not enhance original picture, so if images on that picture are curled, the output is a curled image as well, it does not flatten the image. Snapter: Does just enhance pictures, without any OCR. So it will remove borders, rotates pictures, and flattens the image (this is the best feature :-) if you do a picture of books (at least that is promised on webpage, have not tried it yet...) -> result is a nicer/enhanced picture, which can be read more comfortable on the iLiad Both apps can convert er output to a PDF. So I guess FineReader PDFs are much smaller - but this is not important for me :-) So it looks like, this app, is what I dreamed for! (Only bummer: Windows only app, no Mac version...) |

Hmmmm, a program for converting the contents of one media to an easily used digital one? Sorry but it will need to be banned in the United States since it allows the pirating and redistribution of copyrighted media by bypassing existing use restrictions inherit in the purchased format.
![]() Thank heavens people who deal with books aren't quite as mindless as other media junkie suppliers (even if a bit slower to adopt new technologies like...oh, electricity). |

Snapter Beta (15 days trial) can be downloaded now
I tried Snapter. It does not work like hoped for.
But maybe I need a black tablecloth to put my books on before a make pictures of them. Try it yourself: http://www.atiz.com/snapter.html |

The Snapper trial is Windows only and requires Net 2.0 or higher to install and run.
