Was that after completing a purchase or while trying to pay with Micropay? I only need to use HideMyAss once in a while when the book requires an additional geographic restriction verification in order to download it.

Haven't had any problems using Micropay normally.

That was after using a UK address (but with country=USA) to buy with credit card, then trying to buy with Micropay.

Right after having a very dull moment and feeling rather stupid i finally got how to use Hidemyass.com lol.

So if I use hidemyass to go to fictionwise and register, do I still need to enter a US address at all? I just want to make doubly sure really, so I fill in my address as a US one and also my billing address as a US one too?

The IP-address check when you pay for you books happens almost never. I have been buying books from Fictionwise for several years now, and this happened to me only once.
Just putting an valid USA address in your account, and using that same address as your credit card address should be enough for 99.9% of the time. In a very few cases you willl see a credit card check on your bookshelf instead of a download link. In that case you will need to download the book using hidemyass.com once. After that the extra check will be gone.

I did the same thing... I got so sick and tired of looking at a book, only to find it was geo restricted... They don't want to sell me a book, I'll get it elsewhere.

Fictionwise has become absolutely useless for me.
I used to have 11 ebooks on my wish for quite a while (probably for 1 year, some of them longer)

Two weeks ago.
Wanted to buy one of them.
Crown of Shadows (Coldfire Trilogy, book 3) by C S Friedman
When I wanted to move the ebook from my wish list to my basket, guess what I discovered? The ebook disappeared from my wish completely. It disappeared from Fictionwise along with other Coldfire ebooks.
Well...I bought it here: Diesel
I got what I wanted anyway, so who is the looser?

One week ago.
I had 10 ebooks left on my wish list. I received a 50% off coupon and decided to buy a few ebooks. I added 3 ebooks I had on my wish list to the basket, paid the money and....was able to download only two ebooks. The third was unavailable because of geographical restrictions?
They refunded me of course but...
I checked the rest of the ebooks on my wish list (7 now) and guess how many ebooks I have on it now?
ONE!!! (the rest were removed manually because of geographical restrictions)

What can I say?
Darknet is your friend.

If you want to search fictionwise for what is not geographically restricted, use "Advanced Search" and replace the US entry with your location. I've been disappointed at the limited choice that this reveals (and no freebies). The site is klunky and they seem unbothered about my business, so I'll look elsewhere.

Last night I got my first book bought through Kindle4PC onto my Sony Reader - so Amazon.com will be somewhere that I'll be looking for content instead (although that is still geo restricted, and I may explore getting a US Amazon.com account).

Setting your Amazon account to US is pretty trivial (check the Kindle forum for plenty of advice on this). It's certainly much easier to dodge their geo-restrictions than it is to get around Sony's, in my experience of shopping at both stores.

Hi Ben.
Speaking of klunky, we jsut made some changes to our website www.directebooks.com especially in regards to search. You can now filter your results by price, publish date, date added to the site and alphabetically. I'd appreciate any feedback you might have, good or bad!

Thanks

Gareth

One thing that I've noticed is that when you do a simple search that returns no results, you can't see what you typed to know whether there was a typo. Could it say:

Your search for "damasio" returned no results.

instead? Overall, your site is much less klunky looking than fictionwise. My main problem with the site - which it shares with other ebook sites and is a fault of the publishers I guess - is that it doesn't have the books that I'd like to read. For example, there's not much Doris Lessing - vol2 of her autobiography, but not vol1, none of the Canopus stuff etc.

Fictionwise has 17 books by Doris Lessing if you're looking. I picked up a bunch of them during the December sale.
