So that would require Apple loosening that restriction for them to offer a subscription or prices per issue other than .99, 1.99 etc.
Zinio offers subscriptions, but I am assume that is done via their webpage as well since there has been comments about subscriptions coming to the ipad in time.

In the meantime, if they aren't intending to bring digital comics unlimited to tablets then hopefully marvel will look for alternative options that encourage people to use them beyond that first trial e.g. digital versions of the essential editions where you get about 20 back issues in a single book, the paper versions are b&w only, but to make up for the lack of a physical book then they could do colour in the essential digital editions.

As a company they are more than aware that a fair amount of their audience will tend to be collectors and introducing that kind of mentality to digital comics in such a dripfeed manner is just asking for trouble with the huge amount of cbr/cbz out there.

The app looks great on first look, but it comes up short in some ways. For instance a double page spread would have to be shrunk beyond reason and breaking it up to a page at a time doesn't work either. A 16:9 widescreen would have worked better.

Also half the fun of comics is going to the comic shop, leafing through the new comics, looking in the used comics bin, and talking to the other customers and shop owner.

I'm talking from the perspective of someone who started buying before the comic shop was ever thought of, though, so I am only the father of of some of the current generation of comic readers (although I am still buying and enjoying).

While I never found that stuff quite as fun as you seem to do, it is an underrated part of the comic buying experience although tbh with the lack of good options nearby it hasn't really been part of the comics experience for quite a long time for me, maybe that is another reason after space and cost that I stopped collecting.

The Marvel and Comixology apps let you rotate the device so a double-page spread takes up the entire screen lengthwise. It's still a little small, but a pretty decent solution overall.

Has anybody tried to use the Marvel Digital subscription on the iPad yet? If so how does it look? This may be a selling point for me to get both the iPad and a digital subscription. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Currently there is no way to combine the two, the digital comics service is flash-based so doesn't work on the ipad and the ipad version is purely for use with the comics they sell you via that app.

Chalk up another good use for Flash on a tablet!
