The Sony store routinely has about 25 free contemporary books available for download.

One point with the Sony reader though. You should expect to spend $50.00 for the things that don't come in the Sony box - case, wall charger, ear buds, and currently a book lamp are included with the PEz, but not the Sony.

I will try to be patient. Although I should probably stop downloading books... at last count I had 227 books, just waiting for my pocket pro to get here.

Thanks but sony and Macintosh are not compatible. So, that's not among the possibilities. No great loss (given what I've seen, even when I thought only Kindle2, kindleDX, Nook and the only one Sony reader were the only ones available new or used, Sony was still last in usability because it couldn't connect to a Macintosh computer. I now know there's much more crowded field. A lot of people are pushing sony, but that's not a possibility for me. I do not do windows, sorry. The biggest malware on a windows system is written by Microsoft.

Since when is the Sony library software incompatible with a Mac? This link has a button on the right for "Mac OS X 10.4.11 or later, including Mac OS X 10.6." I agree that the Sony software is kludge and that we shouldn't have to use their kludgy software to download books, but it's not that painful.

People with both Macs and Sonys don't seem to have any problem getting them to work together, but if you buy a PEz, that won't matter anyway. You don't have to own a Sony to get books from the Sony store.

So, I met Robert in person today. He graciously took the time to show me the 5" Pocket Pro (in all 6 colors!). He even clued me in on the upcoming products and such. Thanks, Bob!

I have a question which didn't occur to me until after I'd left. The particular eBook I was reading had very large margins -- it looked like 3/4" all around if not more. I found that this made me kind of claustrophobic, like reading on a smart phone or something. Is this something that has to do with the eBook format (this was an ePub) or the particular file itself or the Pocket Pro? I'm curious if it's possible to get the PP to use the whole of the screen.

Other than that, I really liked it. It was noticeably more responsive than the Sony 300 and seemed faster than the Nook too. It was extremely thin and light and the rubberized texture felt really nice. I liked that it had three different ways to turn the pages because that means you can change positions when your hand gets tired. The buttons had a nice feeling click to them so you know when it's pressed (since the eInk screen isn't the quickest to respond, it's nice to know you for sure pressed something!) And the case, although not the most stylish, is effective for protection and does give it more of a "book" feel in your hand.

So yeah, assuming I can get the margin thing addressed satisfactorily, I will probably be picking up a Pocket PRO soon to be my first e-reader.

Hi dbrowdy,

It is usually not common for margins to be as wide as 3/4". Margins can't be adjusted via the reader itself. Margins can, however, be adjusted by using the program Calibre via the conversion process. With this the margins are definitely fully customizable.

Dear Dan and Javed:

I am very happy that Javed answered your question on margins. Publishers kind of determine the margins in the first place. Some are lazy and do not change the margins when they convert from print to electronic. Most EPUB should not have that problem. But it is great to know Calibre can solve that issue too.

It was a pleasure to meet you and your significant other yesterday. You are both nice people and it is always great to let people play a bit with the Pocket PRO. Glad that the weather was nice!!

Okay that's good to hear. I suspected that was the case but I wasn't sure.
