It appears to be related to bad batteries or battery charging. From my own testing it doesn't appear to be the charges. The manual states 12 - 18v will work and i tried two of them and it still wouldn't charge. Mine is now sitting on the docks in Germany trying to clear customers for repair

I have my very own "bad battery" iLiad to experiment with.

This morning my new friend wouldn't power up on the bus (even though I thought I'd turned it off the previous night). No big deal, charge it when I get to work.

I get to work, plug it in, power it up: battery meter says flat. Hmm must not have turned it off last night like I thought.

Whilst it charged I plugged into the USB and updated content. I unplug the USB and notice that the LED is not red, its off. Wow that was a quick ... err how come the battery meter isn't 100%?

You would think that after getting a run of these they'd pull their inventory and re-test the units before shipping them out. This is getting into the unforgivable category at this point.

Sorry to hear that. I'm not sure how many of these they have shipped, but there definitely seems to be a battery issue trend emerging.

Just received from IREX.......

Your defective device will be replaced with a new iLiad.
You can expect the replacement within the next 2-3 working days

........Not bad, just over a week from when the problem was first reported.

I have a different battery problem. When connected to the charger everything is fine. When on battery the screen changes from high contrast black/white to a narrow range of grey and terrible ghosting of previous images to the point that the current page is illegible. Also if powered off after when on battery the screen stays grey with ghost images of the last 3 screens.

Irex have asked for photos which I have now sent.

Congrats Ducky. I'm hoping to hear the same thing, but unfortunately my unit was held up in customs due to a ups screwup. Hopefully they'll have it back by tomorrow. I'm beginning to believe it's a conspiracy to keep me from reading!

That's very good news, Ducky! Let's hope that iRex won't suffer too much from the expenses if everyone will receive a replacement for broken units in future.

It needs to go back and be replaced - but I had to phone them back to find this out. Now waiting for the empty box.

My unit is off to iRex today, precisely two weeks after my wife brought it to me at lunch.

Their returns box did not include the returns shipment label so I've elected to fork out the $85 USD to return it to them. UPS says they'll have the unit Wed before 10:30am CET.

Scotty,

Was it the battery or did you have another issue? They are supposed to send me a replacement for my replacement which was doa. Nothing would display on the screen at all, although the charging/activity light worked. After my second DOA unit they agreed to send a replacement prior to receiving the other unit back, so I'm hoping to have the 3rd unit by the weekend. Third times the charm as the saying goes!

With mine the battery icon gradually went down to nothing and then stayed greyed out all the time. Charger was putting out correct power to supply the unit. The support person sounded satisfied when I said it started immediately after the upgrade to 2.6 though...

Mine is on a plane to Germany and I hope I have a working new one back by the weekend as well. The least they can do after my taking up the slack for their fulfillment agency. The fulfillment agency really seems to be a major part of their customer service black eye lately.

Defective unit is safely arrived in Germany, UPS already had it cleared through Customs before it arrived.

I suppose iRex should use usual AA/AAA (L3) batteries and no such problems at all!
