You have a Sony, which serves you well... Why even buy a Kindle in the first place? |

Hi Lene,
I did do research. I was planning to switch from the Sonys to the Kindle. The Sony still commands pretty good prices on ebay so I thought I'd be able to sell the 505 and give the 500 to a friend (after having it updated to accept epub). I think everything changed when Apple announced the iPad and their deal with the publishers. At that point my belief that Amazon would be able to maintain the prices it was currently offering disappeared. I think the release of the iPad has given the publishers a tremendous boost in their bargaining strength with Amazon. Having the whispernet was a major deciding factor in getting the Kindle but outside the USA that is only useful for books purchased from Amazon (because of the restriction on use of the Kindles internet browser internationally). If Amazon's books increase in cost as I feel the newly empowered publishers will demand then I will be forced to shop around more for books, which cannot be wirelessly delivered, losing the selling point of the Kindle. I am extremely grateful to everyone who has commented on this thread and helped me sort out my thoughts. I don't want to appear negative toward the kindle, I think it's a great device, just not right for me at the moment as the replacement for the Sony 505 that I thought it would be. |

Maybe for the "fee" - i.e. the $2 surcharge ala international kindle, but the Geographic restrictions are governed by contracts with publishers, that's what determines whether a book is available in a particular location or not. |

After finding and loving my Sony 505, I purchased a Kindle2 for access to the Amazon bookstore which often has cheaper prices. (this was before Kindle4PC) I've also found that I prefer reading things like Science Daily and Newspapers on the Kindle as it has much more usable navigation for jumping around from table of contents to articles and back. |

Well... .I kinda enjoy having Eurpoeans gripe about not getting a decent American product... the Japanese keep their good cars in country, you can't get a Polo or a SEAT in this country for anything. Virtually all the good electronics are first available overseas then finally granted to us poor Colonials...
We may be a technological backwater, but at least we have free Kindle downloads.... |

I have the Sony 505 and the Kindle DX and tried out one other crappy ereader a few months back. I don't see any reason to give up my Kindle because the font sizes are so much larger and better than the others. On my Sony I have to turn it horizontal to get a somewhat larger font (still not enough of an increase) and then I have problems with page turns. It just isn't enough. The Kindle is the perfect all around reader. I only buy a few ebooks from Amazon and still have plenty to read.

Just to update everyone. I kept the kindle in the end.
I had it all packed up and went to the post office with it but when I was at the counter I decided I couldn't go through with returning it. It's now sitting with me in Heathrow airport as we set out on our first trip togethger. |

Nice that you decided to stick with it.
I have to say that the more I use my Kindle, the more I like it. In fact if it had folder support and I could just dump my entire Calibre library onto it as is then it would be my favourite device. Interestingly, the Kindle is the only one I've never had freeze on me or had to reset so it seems pretty stable. Maybe I shouldn't have said that ![]() |

The folder support was the one really neat feature of the Astak Pocket Pro I had.
![]() I do wish the Kindle and Sony had it. |
