I don't know that they'll all need their own forum.

They'll probably mostly just have common e-book apps, rather than having specific stores and formats like the Kindle, Sony etc.

Seems to make more sense to just have a Tablet forum where people can talk about how the tablets are as a whole, how well the programs work on one tablet vs. the other etc.

Tablets will be more like PCs or Laptops in that sense--though with more variety in operating systems with the iPad, Android tablets, Windows 7 tablets etc.

In addition to a forum for the iPad, I'd support a separate forums for devices that can be used as an ebook reader such as PDAs and cell phones if the interest warrants (indicated by a large number of posts relating to a type of device). This would better allow users to find the area of MobileRead that would best help them.

I don't care - I'm pretty much going to ignore all the iPad and tablet threads until I can hold one in my hands and read real reviews.

It's time to catch up on my to-be-read pile or finish formatting a book.

It's not a dedicated reader device, so no. Just rename the existing Apple iPhone forum.

Please please stick it somewhere other than the main parts of the forum.

In the iPod section, Or open a tablet section, or more appropriately put it where it belongs. Under miscellaneous devices. Because I like many, am really sick of hearing about the damn thing. At least Engadget had the courtesy to publish a way to block the iPad from their RSS feed. So there must be at least two or three new posts a day now..

I understand quite a few are really excited about this. But it is getting out of hand.

Yes it definitely should have it's own forum. Like it or not, the iPad is here to stay and this is only the first...
I can see that all the iPad excitement can become an irritation to people who aren't interested, so a separate forum can prevent unnecessary irritation.
The iPad may not be a 'dedicated reading device', but future iPad owners who are members here will probably be using it as a reader - amongst other things... since this IS MobileRead after all .
As for the iPad and/or Apple haters, they can just go into their 'settings' and 'ignore' the offending forum if they wish. That in turn, will leave the iPad enthusiasts space to drool and discuss and speculate etc. in peace.
Just my 2 cents...

But as alluded to earlier in this thread, there are hundreds of other devices on the market that people can also read on. Why should the iPad get special treatment? Especially when there is already a perfectly good Apple related forum? (ie. the one all these threads were just moved to)

Apple iPhone apps != Apple iPad apps, I think this is the strongest reason to have a separate forum. Not to mention the target audience differing. It seems to be worth separating the discussions.

And before you say "Nuh uh!" about the apps, the iPad has compatibility modes for iPhone apps, and a developer can ship a single app that targets both in "Universal" mode which is a fancy way of putting two different programs in one file, but they're still different apps, and will have different concerns/features/behaviors/etc. in many cases.

It's also unclear so far if Apple's iBooks will even make it to the iPhone. I would be sad if it didn't, but still, it's just another reason.

But none of those other devices are nearly as hugely controversial as the iPad! The iPad will be sold worldwide almost simultaneously and on a massive scale unlike any other reader before it.

There's been a reshuffle of the forum coming for a long time now. It's a bit like firmware update for some devices out there
Joking aside, people are working on reorganising the forum structure. I think they should use Tags and filters instead of hard-coded sub-forums, as it doesn't seem to be too easy to create these. People have been asking for a separate Onyx Boox sub-forum for a while for this same reason (avoid polluting the News forum with device specific discussions).

By that logic the "iPad" is the only device actually deserving a forum at all. Heck, Alex should just rename the site iPodread!

We don't even know how well the iPad will sell yet. It might be "the next iPod", or it could share the fate of the iCube.

... OK... but I did use the word - controversial! Also, I'm pretty sure it will 'sell'!

Primarily because usage patterns will ve different for iPad and iPhone. iPad doesn't make calls, doesn't have a camera, you don't take it with you everywhere every day, if only because it weighs more. iPhone doesn't have iBooks, so why make iPhone users have to sift through all threads about iBooks?

Except for the portability, you're also describing my iPod Touch. An iBooks prefix would make the "sifting" easier. Also, do we know that iBooks won't be available as an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch? The app seems to be patterned after an app that already exists (Classics?), so it's not unreasonable to to believe iBooks will be show up on the iPhone and iPod Touch as well.
