Well, if you go by the rules of logic this statement

does not follow from this statement

He is talking about ePub content purchased from Apple, which content includes Apple's DRM; and then bringing in the idea that once you purchase an Apple iBook you will not be able to read that iBook on a Kindle (as an example) eReader Device. So if he is knocking something he is knocking the idea of purchasing content from iBooks.

He is not talking about firing up your iPad, IGNORING the iBook app on the iPad, and then invoking your NYTimes Reader or your Barnes and Noble Reader to read content that did not come from the Apple Store. The applications I mention do not know how to decode Apple DRM, but they do not care either.

THEN the article you reference goes on to talk about how consumers of FLASH content are out of luck with the iPad; which is of course true, since you do not purchase such content and store it but consume it on the fly, and no one is making FLASH consumption available on the iPad (probably because the processor can't handle it? - just a guess on my part).

If you are saying you prefer to have one Reading Application on your multi-application iPad, then yes, I agree that preference is a non-starter with the iPad and you would not want to acquire one.

Not buying into the idea that the Barnes and Noble iPhone eReader is roadkill UNTIL Apple says explicitly "it is history."

You don't care about market fragmentation and how it's going to screw over ebook adoption rates again? Oookay. Advocating stripping DRM, which is illegal in many counties, is not a solution for a lot of people.

How is it "more open than other readers", incidentally?

Got a source for that, or just wishful thinking? It might read disinfected epub/PDF. It might be able to run the Kindle, and B&N, and Kobo, and whatever apps. It might be able to load user content. Or it might not do any of these things, especially since opening up the device to other stores/formats would kill Apple's e-book strategy deader than the Apple ][.

I haven't been following the IPAD but it seems like it will support EPUB but if you buy from Apple, Apple will have their own DRM scheme that is different from the one used by Sony or Barns and Noble?

If true, I think that stinks and DRM is killing ebooks. EPUB is starting to be the standard format, now companies need to standardize their DRM schemes. But I guess companies want to lock consumers into their own store and their own devices.

The iPad comes with the iBooks application which downloads from the iBookstore
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBookstore

Yes. It sounds like ePub content on iBookstore will introduce yet another flavor of DRM
http://gizmodo.com/5458645/adobe-res...-lack-of-flash

So far all I can locate is Adobe Inc saying this.

Oh, and this thread of course

The inability to get content onto the ipad (no USB) is a big negative.

It apparently makes use of a Shared Folder concept, and I am guessing does this via Wi-Fi (network drive?) or Bluetooth?

Not saying I agree with this design decision but so far there is no evidence you can't move your own content onto the iPad.

But yes, a lot of folks are declaring it a VERY closed system because connectivity to a desktop was apparently not demonstrated (I have seen no pictures of such).

Kobo thinks they are on board, so if the iPad is totally locked down so as to prevent non-iBooks books from being read hopefully Apple will tell them

Oh they will. After they've gone through submission. At least "we don't accept this kind of app" rejections are clearcut and don't involve a load of silly back and forth.

Yes, Apple's policy on this sucks wind.

Okay. You believe that and I do not.

Guess that means we agree to disagree?

No, I mean if Apple have locked the "book store" category down, they won't tell them before they submit. That's too easy :/

It has just occurred to me that I no longer need to follow this thread. If I were inclined to locate information on the iPad being too restrictive towards eBooks all I need to do is follow
http://blog.kobobooks.com/
I am pretty sure Kobo would complain, and let the public know via their Blog, if they are informed they won't be participating at iPad launch.

In any case they sure seem enthusiastic!

"I can’t wait for you to see Kobo for iPad when it ships in 60 days. In fact, we are so excited about it – we’ve included some screen shots of Kobo for iPad."

Current book reading apps would be running in a sort of "emulation mode" on the iPad. that is in a small sized window due to screen resolution design. Even magnified, it's not taking up a full screen. To use the full 9.7" screen you need iPad apps.

I think it's good to have a wait and see approach until the product is actually out to see if Apple will allow iPad specific book apps to be added. They historically have been reluctant to let in apps that compete with 'native Apple' apps at least the ones they feel take a piece of their money.

Wait and see is good but you wont need 'ipad apps' existing apps can be updated to allow them to also suit the iPad resolution, that wont mean a different app just one app that works on both resolutions.

Actually it will 100% read disinfected ePub(via a kludge) as i can easily convert a didinfected ePub to html or txt or a word doc even.

so all someone would need to do is release a nice app that reads those formats in a reading friendly way. yes that would involve conversion but it is doable.

PS I dont for a second think taht will be neccesary as stanza etc will all be fine imo.
