@happy_terd

I have never smoked and therefore no nothing about quitting.
However, I'm sure you are determined and you certainly have all our support. Good luck!

You will know when you are over the 'hardest' day/s when your partner stops holding out the smokes to you

Chris quit right before Christmas. He said that the hard part wasn't the nicotine cravings, it was the behavior patterns. He tried using the gum, but it was too strong. He tried the medium dosage patch, that worked great for the first day, but found the second day that it too, was too strong. After that he did it on his own. He had one backslide, but that was behavioral rather than "I've got to have a smoke". He always grabbed a smoke when he got on the phone with someone - well, we hadn't moved his smoking supplies, so he went to call his brother, and, not thinking, grabbed a cigarette. He said he got two puffs before he remembered (when his throat started burning), and he put it out. I missed the whole thing, I was at work. He told me about it that night and man was he mad at himself about it! It's been a month now, and as far as I can tell (I'm sure he'll correct if I'm wrong), he's doing great.

Good on you mate!
I am seriously thinking of ditching the smokes again. I'd been off for about 2 years and then fell of the band wagon big time. No matter how long I stay off the smokes, it only takes me a but a puff to be back in the gutters. I didn't go back to smoking because of cravings - I did it because I'm a bloody idiot .
You should try Allen Carr's Easy Way book - it helped me immensely last time I quit. The best thing about his book is that you are free to puff away while reading it. The book really deconstructs the whole issue of smoking addiction and how to kick it.

Best of luck to you! When going gets tough, just remember - craving lasts for a few minutes only. The rest is just your mind messing with you!

PS: Just in case you are thinking of swapping your kindom for a real camel - just come down under! We have so many of these buggers running around the outback we are trying to get rid of! Just hurry up, I hear Saudis are putting in a bid already

I did good one year and had quit smoking for several weeks. But I decided that it wasn't so hard to accomplish and that I wasn't really addicted to the nicotine anyway so it would be okay if I smoked now and then so long as I didn't pick it up again as a habit. So I smoked a few with friends one night and threw them away the next day (the taste in my mouth was disgusting and wondered how I stood it the night before). A month or so later, I did it again. Then it was a couple of weeks later. Then.....you know....I was back at a pack or so a day. It took me another year and half to finally quit for good. Bottom line: once you quit don't smoke another puff ever again!

Stay on course, repeat this mantra: I will not die of smoke-related cancer.

Good luck. After a few days it's just psychological, your body is way over the addiction.

Hang in there! I've quit smoking before I even started, so I can't help you with tips. but look at the bright side! Look back at all those times where you had to smoke... Now you can use that time to read a book!

If I could quit, you can quit! Here's what happened to me:

I was up to about a pack and a half a day and working rotating shift. We had a large metal ashtray at the desk that was wide at the bottom, then narrowed to a vertical pipe then flared out at the top. Anyway, I was working a mid shift and smoking away. I went to stub out a cigarette and the ashtray went POOF and a cloud of ash rose up out of the top. IOW, the thing was completely filled up.

Since it was a mid shift and I wasn't too busy, I grumbled and picked the ashtray up and carried it out the back of the building to the large ashcan where you were supposed to empty the thing. I unscrewed the metal top part at the base and, when I saw what came out of the thing (remember this was all guys using this thing 24/7 and not too shy about what they put in the thing), I never touched another cigarette and that was over 40 years ago!

Whenever I got the urge, I thought of what came out of that ashtray...that was my lungs...and I immediately lost the desire.

For a couple of years, I didn't mind the smell of cigarettes and, in fact, kept ashtrays in my apartment for anybody who wanted to smoke. But then the smell started bothering me and that's when you know you are truly free of the habit!

Anyway, good luck to you. You can do it!!!!

Think how much nicer you're making the world for those around you. I sit near a girl at work who smokes. Her clothes, her coat, her hair - everything about her absolutely stinks of tobacco - it's disgusting.

And remember, we're all on your side.

Thanks for all the support. Another day gone by and I made it through without killing anyone too important.

4 more days will be 1 full smoke free week and then I will consider myself successfully tobacco free.
