Since Asus is a local company, I hope I can see it in the local electronics markets soon. Sounds interesting.

Maybe they didn't want to do an Irex with any premature announcements

As I commented before, I think we won't be seeing this device in shops before last quarter of the year. The Engadget article did mention (or was is Slashgear?) that Asus is still resolving some major software issues.

The article mentions that the device will only support "unprotected ePub"? That's a bit odd. So no DRM here, eh?

There is another SiPix ereader from Taiwan, they call it smart reader, here is a review from a prs 500 user, which is in Chinese, but you could find dozens of photoes there: http://www.hi-pda.com/forum/viewthre...=551991&page=1

In my opinion, the contrast is worse than prs 500.

This is good to know. There have been some conflicting images about that display SiPix. The comparison to the PRS-500 wasn't very fair since the 500 was using a 黑/Hei font which will always look much better than light 細明/Ming fonts (新細明體/PMingLiU is terrible on E-Ink too).

Despite being exported from Taiwan and a few being demonstrated at shows, it is not very easy to find them locally in Taiwan. When I have some more time, I'll try to track one down myself.

My main question is, if the Asus device will have a plastic substrate screen. Anyone?

I suspect not. None of the SiPix devices at CES had plastic substrate. I think it may be due to the capacitive touch screen but not certain. AUO says they will deliver a plastic substrate version in 2010. Netronix showed one for their 9.7" but again it won't ship until much later, 2 half of the year. It evidently was more complicated to do than they expected.
