I've been using my nook exclusivly since christmas without ANY problems, except for the ones that were fixed in 1.2 upgrade.
No button cracking, no losses, no problems at all... and using caliber to convert books is a breeze....
I usually turn pages with the touch screen instead of the buttons, however I do use the buttons on occasion. At first I used the buttons all the time until I learned how to "swipe" the touch screen to turn pages...

I received my nook at Christmas, must say with the latest OS upgrade, absolutely love it. Today just noticed the crack in the case. Very frustrated. So far not a major issue, but wish it didn't occur. Want to exchange it, but concerned that if I exchange it now, it will happen again in 5 months. I am hoping to read they have redesigned it, and get that version.

Anyway, not a show stopper, but wish it didn't happen. Wondering if I did exchange it, and put a skin on it, if that would help? Probably not.

I suggest you go ahead and try to exchange it. I have two nooks since December and have not had any problems with either.

I have had 3 nooks. 1st had serious freezing issues, returned it for an exchange. 2nd one had page-forward button cracking. Ignored it until the bezel cracked / broke all the way across which made the button hard to press, returned it for an exchange. 3rd one has been fine *knock wood*. IME if the button cracking is going to happen it will start to turn up within a month or so. Software release 1.3 got rid of any lingering issues for me with the nook except battery life (by which I mean I would like it to last at least 20 hours of reading rather than ~ 13 per charge). My experience with B&N are that they are responsive and fast with customer service and if you give them a credit card # as security (you can use the one linked to your account) they will send you the new one and give you 2 weeks to get the old one back, so you don't have to miss a day of reading.

The demo unit at the local B&N had cracked buttons, but they recently replaced it and added another demo unit with the free book promotion. The Nook setup is huge now.

My page forwarding button cracked after owning it for three weeks -- and I've been using it daily, too. It cracked all the way across the white portion of the bezel, too, from screen to edge. Naturally, I was disappointed, but then I realized that the button still worked, and I could still pull the back cover off without any problems. So, I thought, what the heck. Sooner or later everything I own gets to looking worn and used, why would this be any different? Having well-handled and weathered gear only goes to show how useful it is. And now I no longer have to handle it gingerly, trying to hang on to its pristine state.

So far I love my nook, and am not bothered by the freezing problem (now that I figured out to shim the battery), and relatively short-lived battery life, the inconsistent behavior of the touch screen, and, of course, now the cracked page forward button. Its other benefits far outweigh these bugs. I was dubious about the Sony eReader, and the Kindle, and I've been eying up other eReaders for about a year, but the nook is the first one that struck me as something I'd like using.

This is the case with mine, the crack on the page forward button, and I know I was at a B&N and a lady was there exchanging her's because of the crack that was affecting the page turning. I'm thinking of going and exchanging it, except that I'm worried that it may happen again--but if this is a rare problem, maybe I'd be okay in exchanging it sooner rather than later. Also, it isn't affecting the page turning yet. We'll see. I'd hate to wait and then the warranty would expire and then have it start affecting the page turning.

Both of my page forward buttons cracked.
Called up B&N and my new nook is on the way under warranty exchange. No problem.

The page forward button on my first nook cracked and I had it replaced under the warranty exchange program. Now my second is staring to crack in the same place but I was just going to live with it for a while until tonight when my screen when dark and nothing I do seems to change it. I have been very happy with my nook up until this point and don't want to get a different e-reader. I am just hoping that I can get it replaced just as quickly.

I think wifi and or 3g is an upgrade for some people (like me). The 16 levels of grey over 8 is an upgrade if you read graphic novels or manga (like me). The nook has more internal memory (upgrade). And, the ability to buy from the B&N store in addition to the Sony one is an upgrade. Also, some people like to see their book covers in color (upgrade). Oh, and user replaceable battery is an upgrade.

Downgrades:

Sony has better metal casing
Sony has better battery life

If you are an active reader (and right-handed you will be very likely to experience a cracked right forward button within a year of use. However, I found that BN had no problem replacing my Nook when this happened. They didn't give me any trouble at all and even sent the new Nook before I sent out the old Nook. They give you 14 days to ship it back to them but they send your new Nook 2nd day air.

I'm sure they will engineer this defect out of Nook 2.0 since it must have cost them quite a lot of money by now.

Nook is a nice idea, but very poor battery life spoils it.
Stick with the Sony!

the cracked button has been covered during the one year manuf. warranty. I didn't do the ext. warranyty I'm not too worried about it.

and yes if you did buy the 2 yr ext. warranty then it will be a total of 3 years coverage. I know the BN ext warranty covers everything, you could throw in the streets and it's still covered. don't know abou the best buy one.

I was gonna get one at Bestbuy because I think they would help me or at least let me look through the models till I find one that can be soft rooted. Now that some cant:

2010-08-14 NEW: Barnes and Noble has likely introduced a new hardware revision which bricks your unit if you install their official 1.0.0 Firmware (A step needed to root). As of right now, Nooks with serial #s starting with 1003 (running firmware 1.4.1) cannot be rooted, and should NOT be attempted. See New_Hardware_Revision for more details

Yeah... :-( I think B&N would look at me funny....
