Hi all,
one issue related to expired library ebooks that annoys me is that I am not able to simply "renew" a book and continue reading. If, for some reason, I want to keep a book longer, I need to check it out from scratch again. There are a few problems with that:
1 - I lose any bookmarks I had on my eReader
2 - my library has a limited number of digital copies of a book, so it could be unavailable at the time I want to renew it...

Is this the way it works for all libraries using Overdrive?

Yup--that's just the way it works. As TGNY found out, you can keep reading a book that's expired as long as you don't open a different book.

Another trick that might work is to set the date on your reader back a few days--giving yourself more time before the book expires. (This has worked for me on my 505--but I have a feeling that the wi-fi on the 900 might update the date automatically).

Thats how it works for mine.....Also, are you making sure that your check out date is set for the maximum?

My Library allows me to check out books for 7, 14, or 21 days.

I have a library book with 1 day left so I tried your date trick. I now have an additional 10 days on my 900. And I keep the wifi turned off so I know for certain it won't change the date

update: I connected to my computer to side load a couple of new books. The date got reset so bear that in mind when you are extending your loan time surreptitiously.

There are ways around the expiration issue as subsequent posters have mentioned, but I wanted to comment on the renewing an ebook that is expiring.

Many times a library will only have one license for a particular ebook. If that ebook is popular and lots of people want to read it there will be a waiting line to check out that title. If I'm next in line and the person who has the ebook wants to extend his loan period for an extra 14 or 21 days I would not be happy and that means I, and everyone else in line behind me, would have to wait.

When checking out ebooks, I will typically make sure my download works properly on my Reader, then return the title to the library so the next person who wants to download it can do so right away. As long as I don't connect my Reader to ADE it doesn't know I've returned the book and I have the ebook for the full 14 or 21 days.

Valid point about being considerate of others. I always (manually) return my book immediately after I'm finished reading, regardless of how much checkout time remains. And you're right, when I do so, the book remains on my Reader.

Agreed, but this is the way my library works for physical books. I can renew a physical book up to something like 3 times if I'm not done reading it, even if others are waiting for it. I thought it would work the same for ebooks.
Speaking of licenses, how much does it typically cost for a library to get ebook licenses for books? How does it compare to physical book purchases?

Thanks.

I think that's unfair for others. The way it works here is if I have a book out and I don't finish it in time, and there is a reserve on it, I have to return it and get back in line. That's the fair way to do it.

Agreed. Our local libraries work the same way and it's definitely fair. They also occasionally have "hot" titles that are just a one-week rental, no renewals — haven't seen that one in the eBook world yet, everything I looked at was available for up to three weeks..

Same here. My local library even has a "Fast Read" section. It contains newly released books that you can only take out for 4 days with no renewal. I was thrilled to discover that they had recently added ebooks to their collection. After having read this thread, I will definitely take some of the suggestions I've read here to heart to make the titles I check out available to the next person as quickly as possible.
