there was a study once, when i lived in the philippines.
they wanted to find out what people thinks of themself the luckies!

the philippine people won! even as poor as they are - they think of themself lucky - and sure it is.
i have never senn luckier people. they are smiling and laughing all the day, very helpful and it is hard to get them angy.

if i can get offered a posting to manila again -> i would no flinch a second, and so does my family. we had happy 4 years there.

harry

ps: when you get paid in foreign money the stuff is not so expensive over there

Hi, teammate, and welcome aboard.

I love my Kindle. The only reservation I have about recommending one to you is that I don't know how well the wireless function will work in the Philippines. But even if you have problems in that regard, you can always download books via the USB connection; assuming you have a computer or access to one.

hey guys.

@mr sharpe: as for the online connection, my friend who has a kindle is able to download books over whispernet. i mean, i kind of do my research well anyway and if it so happens that it didn't work, i'd go for the sony readers. plus i love the idea that i'd have free wikipedia access anywhere

@mr harry: it's great that you like our culture. it's been said that only filipinos can smile in calamities, even if they lost everything. the recent major flood was a great example: people who have lost their homes, even their loved ones amassed on the streets to help neighbors and other countrymen. although i believe that's the very problem plaguing our country. filipinos are always happy (and feeling lucky) that we've become complacent as a nation. lots of developmental approaches that have worked well with the african nations aren't really taking off locally. might i ask what industry/field you're engaged in? (I'm gunning for ADB once I get my master's degree from harvard/oxford/lse/iss hahaha)

hi teammate,
i was with the german embassy in manila and now i am with the permanent mission of germany to the united nations in new york.

if you can get into adb - that would be the best what could happen to you!
thats like a license to print money.
the guys from adb have more privileges than other diplomates, have their own gasstation, restaurants, shops, travel agency - and all tax free!

keep trying

happy reading
harry

Wow. And I thought people over here were just enamored by the idea of ADB. Hearing it from a foreigner himself... Well, I'm convinced. I'm going to save that post of yours and keep it on my desktop for impetus.
