Yeah robert, I use msconfig on a daily basis! another one of M$'s major OS flaws in my opinion but what's worse is they've continued to add every program you install to the start menu as default right through all their OS & only the experienced users know about it. Same as disk cleanup & defragmenter, the list goes on...
How much RAM have you got in your 64 bit VISTA computer? I'd max it out just to try it, LOL 16GB
The only issue I've seen in VISTA 64bit is an issue with IE not playing WMP via the browser & it needed a patch from M$ to repair it but that was ages ago & it was probably implemented into a service pack at some point.

I do like 7 though after using and fixing a few hundred VISTA computers over the last couple of years. I can see new computer users finding their way around it a lot faster and easier than VISTA for sure! I'm sure they'll find a way to mess 7 up in the near future though? I've already witnessed a few errors myself but nothing major & the reader program seemed to have no installation issues at all
I guess we all use our computers for our own individual purposes and are used to what we have so why change it if it works! My advice to VISTA users who are thinking of upgrading is to BACK IT ALL UP prior to trying the online upgrade. Do a search on the net too as there's lots of ppl having issues
The one good improvement they made to VISTA when creating it is the fact that it doesn't format the HDD when re-installing, it put's the old OS into a folder on C:\ called Windows.old so all your beloved ebooks will still be there if all goes wrong

Having had some great responses from a lot of nice ppl I now feel confident to help others locally so thank you all kindly for your input

thanks for all the replied and interest its really appreciated
One of the things I learded over the years is that when working on someones computer (or really most anything) you have to ignore what they say. I know it sounds awful, but it's true. I act like I am taking into account what they say, but really I'm going to go through the basic steps and seek to solve the problem. Well over three fourths of the time when they say "I didn't change anything", that means they screwed it up. They just don't realize they did it. I just fix issues for friends and family, but I know if I believed what they told me I would never get the problem solved.
