As a slightly off topic comment: here's hoping that Kovid finds a way to circumvent the Win7Pro issues or there are likely to be a lot of disappointed calibre users!

I, er, hate the Sony software with the passion of a thousand dying suns and won't use it. Now that we have unswindle, I don't need to use it for anything at all!

I hereby acknowledge this is a Calibre-based answer, and not what you asked for, but it is a work-around that I have used and may be useful for someone, somewhere.
I'm starting to do something similar with Calibre because I've decided that I want to store my books as ePub, but I don't like how its file management. I have my own, idiosyncratic, naming system for book files, so I prefer to convert them to ePub using Calibre, then rename them & move them to my own book archives. It would be nice if Calibre had an option similar to Windows Media Player that lets you choose which properties to embed in the file name, and in which order (Tools/Options/Rip/File Name). But book properties are so variable that I'm not sure even that would be practical. (Who's the author of the Nancy Drew books, for example? The Carolyn Keene house name, or the ghostwriter? And what about anthologies which might have many authors? Just a couple of examples of the problems with any 'automatic' embedding of author names in book file names.)

So I don't expect there will ever be a 'universally' acceptable method. The best I expect is something like Calibre-it'll do the cataloging/conversion but you'll need to rename them manually to your preferences-and then you'll also need to load them onto your device manually.

I do believe that the latest version of Calibre lets you customize the structure of the file system used to store books.

One thing I have noticed, is that tags and other info seem to not be picked up if you merely copy the files over. I had some books tagged in calibre, and copied them over to my 505, and the tags went byebye.

Thanks for all the fish....

OK, OK, already!

I was asking for comments on the software that came with ereaders.

I'm starting it off again under "Reading and Management "
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69378

Maybe the sample of what I'm looking for will be easyer to understand.

Remember KISS

By the way, thanks to those that wanted to help solve my Calibre / WMI problem but nothing found on the internet fixed it.
