I figured I would go and check on the ticket.
It was closed with a note that explains how to fix the problem:

Go to Preferences->Interface and enable the system tray icon. then --start-in-tray will work. --help wont work on windows as windows doesn't support console output from GUI executables.

So, basically start Calibre like normal and select the option in Preferences screen. Close Calibre and then start it from the command line with the --start-in-tray option and it'll run in the tray. You can even click on it to access the gui and "x-ing" out of the gui will keep it running in the tray.

Just out of curiosity, can I run calibre-server on its own within an init.d type thing on my Ubuntu box? That way I don't have to be logged in to get access to the catalog.

I'm not sure if it's relevant, but the calibre GUI can be started from the console with "calibre-debug -g" and console output then appears in the startup console window.

I did some looking around here in mobileread and web, but couldnt find this info. I think I know (theoretically, that is) how to automate retrieving news and sending it to my kindle (of course with the 15c/MB fee from amazon) using Calibre. The problem I have is that it requires my computer to be on (which means I have to either switch it on, or schedule it to come up at certain time every day). It is not too bad, but a nuisance nonetheless.

I am sure there are other people who wants to do (or are already doing) this. I am wondering if there is a server somewhere where I can register and subscribe to some of those news feeds and it will automatically generate and send out the feeds to my kindle at a specified time? That way I dont have to keep my computer running all the time. A server like that can service 100s or thousands of users easily. If it doesnt exist, I am thinking of creating one for anyone to use (no ETA at this point). Do you think it will violate somebody's copyrights?

It will definitely violate copyrights, which is why such a server doesn't currently exist.

But it is ok if I just run that on my computer on a schedule, as long as I *send* - *by email* - the generated book only to *my* kindle? Or do I have to use USB to sync? I know nobody here is a lawyer, but what do you guys know/think?

I just got myself a kindle, and as you see, am getting excited a bit

yeah as long as you are not making the content publicly available, I don't see why there should be a problem.
