Hi Dave - I've a feeling we are asking the same question... I too would like to avoid the Sony library software, but I'd want to register to have the ability to update firmware when necessary.

Then again, perhaps firmware is not really an issue for Sony readers, I'm thinking iPod and Apple.

Enjoy the device, I have to wait a month before I can get my hands on mine!!

Sony rarely issues firmware updates for their devices, in my experience. Maybe 1-2 before the device is replaced by something new, and with the ePub migration being the exception, they are almost always bugfixes.
