Other small slate type devices:
Hands on Dell Slate -- runs Android and the problem there is reader software but as the year goes on, hopfully we will see all the major players develop software for it. I believe there is a version of FBReader for Android under development and running. HP Slate Device -- My personal favorite here because it runs Win7 which means there will be pretty much any reader software you can ask for...I do not believe it is daylight readable nor is the Dell either but I might be incorrect...watch some of the related videos after the horrid HP 17-sec video...sheesh why evne bother with a 17-sec video? |

yeah, Harry, they had an announcement today, well yesterday, Thursday PT. This is what early leaks thought was going to be the MS Courier. Still it's a pretty nice, potentially anyway. Much depends on the price.
The Dell device is small, something around 5"-7" but the HP seems more in the 8"-9" range from looking at a couple of the YouTube videos where Steve Balmer used it to show off Win7 on small devices. |

Just a quick note regarding backlit devices: screen technology does play a factor in their outdoor usability. Right now, I use my smartphone for reading - it's a Samsung Omnia II, which has an AMOLED screen. Indoors, I can turn off the backlight, and it still provides enough light to read in the dark. Outdoors, I can turn the backlight on, and it is 100% usable, even in bright sunlight. (Having said that, I hate reading on it over long periods of time, and hope to have a Sony Reader within the next few days)
