My library does not have a method of returning items for eBooks so I can't say. It is likely you will need to erase it but I can't say for sure. Are you making a decision to buy? Do you really need this level of detail?

No I'm just trying to make sure I've not missed a step that the library will charge me over!

That is one of the beauties of eBook checkout. The checkin is automatic after the period expires. Never any overcharges. The reason for the checkin and checkout is that a Library honors the number of purchased copies of a book even in electronic form.

What I've noticed is that you can copy the books to the PP and "return" them using ADE and they still work on the PP

Not what you mean by "return them using ADE".

When you mouse over the book in the ADE reader, a ">" appears in the upper left. Clicking it activates a pull-down menu from which you can choose to delete the book from the ADE reader/library/bookshelf/whatever you want to call it.

If you delete it after transferring to your PP, then I would expect you will be able to continue reading it until it expires.

In ADE you can press the little arrow before the book title and select "Return Borrowed Item" and as long as you don't plug the PP back into the computer with ADE running, it will continue to be readable on your PP until expiry, but the library considers the book returned early.

I have downloaded both epub and pdf books from the public library, altho not necessarily at the same time, without any problem. Today i downloaded a pdf library book and it will not open on the pp. I have it in Digital Editions on both the internal memory and the SD card, and it just flashes the hourglass symbol and then the pdf symbol. 2 other pdf books that i got free from the Sony library site quite a while ago will also not open and they have before. They all open both on the computer itself, and when I look at the contents of the pp and its SD card on the computer, it goes over to ADE and the books open. I don't have any other epub library books on the pp.
The only 2 different things that I notice from previous times is that there is a Sony Reader folder on the SD card now, I think it appeared when I downloaded the Sony software in order to convert one free Sony book that I got before their conversion to epub.(OR when I downloaded the PP November firmware. That part doesn't make sense though.) I downloaded that book before I decided against buying a sony and went with the PP. However, even if the SD card is out of the PP, that particular book, converted to epub is on the PP. No sony folder shows up on the internal memory of the PP. So did I totally contaminate my PP with Sony's inabiity to read ADE pdf and epub at the same time?
The other thing that happened as I was downloading and transferring the library book, is that Adobe Reader 9 popped up and wanted to update to 9 and I let it, so it downloaded while the PP was connected. Did I just burn out some ability to read DRM'd pdf's?
Everything opens up just fine on my computer, and also when the PP is connected to the computer, just not on the PP by itself.
Help!! So frustrated. Thanks

Hi Eatnread, have you authorized your Pocket Pro with ADE? (I don't have one yet so I'm not speaking from experience, it's just something I remember reading that needs to be done.) Hopefully someone here who has one can answer your question for you!

Never mind, all is well. Somehow, the library book got opened (or rather, didn't open)with XPDF., so none of the DRM pdf s opened. I thought about that, because it happened one other time when I was first playing with the PP. But I couldn't find the option of opening with regular pdf.
What I did was open a regular pdf manuel that I had on the PP, then hitting the menu button, which gave me the option of -read in Adobe PDF-, which I selected, and then ALL other pdf books opened. Quite a roundabout way of being able to fix the problem. But I'm happy and reading again.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. As you can see from my last message, I finally figured out a solution. But that was one of the things I did try-authorizing. In fact, my computer is tired of having to tell me so many times that it is already authorized.
So. lesson learned. When you're in a pdf, don't go to option #9 in the menu and pick -Read by XPDF-. Because what you have to do then is go to another pdf -a non DRM- open that, repick option #9, and change to -Read by Adobe PDF- in order for all the others to open. That only took me a couple of hours of messing around to figure out!

Thanks.

Apparently, I have only looked at it after the books have timed out so the choice is "delete". I'll keep that in mind if I finish a book ahead of the timeout.

You think you've got problems? You should try filling in all the forms after acceptance as an Overdrive (ContentReserve) publisher. One thing I can assure you is that they have a pretty effective bullshit-books filter. Hoots. Neil
