My latest experience with Sony s/w.

I friend of mine bought a brand new computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I downloaded the latest Sony s/w from the Internet. Installed it.
I downloaded the latest Adobe Digital Edition from the Internet. Installed it.
Next day he bought an ebook from Waterstone's and uploaded it to his PRS-505.

No problems.

Well, it seems pretty clear from this poll that the overwhelming majority of users don't have problems with it.

Very good Harry.

My next question is........

Is that because the majority of users are more computer/e-book knowledgeable?

I know many of the long time users here have been reading on e-books, and dealing with their computers before they got the sony.......while for many of the newbies this is their first device.

Could that make a difference in the difficulty for some?

You betcha!

I didn't do anything but click on Check For Updates or something in the software and I just followed along with the defaults. I'm not a computer geek either. That's for sure.

I do not use it because it would not run. I recently got a PRS-600. I installed the Sony software that came with the reader. The install seemed to go perfectly. When I clicked on the icon, it would not come up. BUT ... the processes for it were running in the background. I am not a computer/software newbie, but this was frustrating. After about 3 hours (wasted) I went to Calibre and never looked back.

Is this a 64-bit OS issue with the software? I am running Win7 Home Premium 64 bit.

I just got my PRS-600 in November. I installed the old version of the Sony software (pre-EPUB), and then upgraded to the newer version a week or two later. I had no problems with the install or upgrade.

However, three different times I have had issues with syncing stuff. The first time I just deleted everything I'd put onto my reader, and started the sync again. After that, I took the advice (from somewhere in these forums) and only synced stuff that I got from Sony. It was mostly going OK, except that something got out of sync last week, and I lost all my places in all my books, and the Software won't sync anymore. It hangs on whatever the first item is that it finds.

Overall, my view of the Sony software is that when it works, it's fine, nothing to write home about. The sync feature is irritating when it doesn't work, and the access to the Sony store through the software is clunky. I usually use the web to search for something, and then go into the software only if I want to buy something. I suspect that if it was easier to access Sony's book store, they would probably sell more stuff.

I've used Calibre a little bit, but haven't invested the time to really learn or understand it. I do like the single key actions.

I've had no problems with Adobe DE.

I may be the minority here - but I'd rather drag & drop my stuff onto the reader or SD card that use software to sync it. That's why I prefer the Sony over the Kindle or even the nook (because I already have the SD cards).

I think that's why it's been so frustrating trying to get the GEB-1150 ready to use for my daughter, because drag & drop isn't available.

I use calibre, to manage all my ebooks. But the Sony software is competent enough...

I've never installed the software, and don't even know what it looks like. There is no version available for my operating system (Linux), and I wouldn't feel right about installing it on my wife's Mac. I've been getting along fine without it so far, but might try to install it one day on an old Windows pc that's lying around at the office. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to register my device at some point.

I only used the Sony software for registering and getting the occasional book from the Sony store, had no problems with the install. Otherwise Calibre is my choice.

When I open the Sony reader software, I can't close it, I have to use task manager to close it. I've never been impressed with any Sony software, though their hardware is usually good. I've had nothing but problems with Sony software, and it typically is so limited in capability, it's not worth bothering with it.

I don't use the software, I only ever installed it once, took a quick look and then uninstalled it. I now just use a folder in my Dropbox account and Sigil to correct any files that need correcting.
