I've seen rumors from several sources that its readability is much better because of the higher greyscale?

Would you please include PDF viewing? I would like to know how has the bigger screen improved the experience, especially when reflowing academic papers!

Thanks

Thanks to the increased size, PDFs are very readable in landscape mode with no need for zooming or font size changes. The drawback is that there are about 3 screens per page (lots of virtual screen turns per PDF page). Otherwise, the functionality is quite similar to the PRS-600.

My first look review is here: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/ubbt...p?Number=35512

We should have a video review up tomorrow (Weds.) afternoon.

Thanks for a great review of the PRS-900. I love the pictures. I especially like the one that is side by side with PRS-600. It looks like the PRS-900 is the same width as the PRS-600, even though the PRS-900 is longer.

Nice first look review.

What is supposed to be new for PDFs is "fit to screen", i.e. autocropping of margins. This is something that has been long requested on the Sonys (it was apparently available on the PRS-505 before the switch to Adobe software for PDFs). Is this noticeably better than, say, on a PRS-600?

Has the ePub reader been upgraded? For example, does it allow full justification?

Fit to screen is available in books and PDFs, though it barely changes the margins in books (ePUB). It certainly does a good job of removing margins in PDFs, but text is still quite small in portrait mode.

Full justification seems to depend on the book: Stephen King's Skeleton Crew = yes, Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol = yes (don't shoot me for mentioning that book ), one of the free Sony classics now updated to PDF (Moon and Sixpence) = no.

In a more general answer: it seems ePub gets fully justified, while PDF doesn't.

ePUB full justification depends on how the book was laid out. As I mentioned, Sony didn't bother tweaking their classics (those public domain books they gave you 50 of for free with older readers), so there's a ragged right margin on their updated ePUB versions. But if the book was set up with full justification, you'll get full justification on the 900.

I suspect that the 900 would support full justification in a PDF, but I haven't found one in my arsenal yet that uses full justification.

Ideally, most of the ePubs won't even specify a justification (mine that I create don't). The default is full justification in that case.

Only sections declared with a different justification will display differently.

I had the chance to play with the 900 today at the local SonyStyle shop.

The ePub has definitely been updated. It does support full justification if the CSS says to be in full justification. Also, the tiny page number at the right side has been removed. Also, you can remove the margins to zoom in. That's nice. And the landscape two-page mode is nice.

On my 505, I get 32 lines per page where on the 900, the same page would be 38 lines. The speed is nice. And it has 16-shades.

I plan to post a more detailed review on my blog next week, but so far (after 2 days) I LOVE the Daily Edition. The 2 biggest pleasant surprises for me: I really enjoy the experience of browsing the Sony store from the device. For me, it works better than browsing other book stores via a browser. Maybe its due to the fact I am browsing on the device I will also read on. Not sure, i just really, really like it. And the 2 page landscape view is awesomeness.

I finally posted my full review of the Daily Edition on my blog here: http://fantasybookreviewer.blogspot....00-review.html. I ended up returning the Pocket Edition to Best Buy, and keeping the Daily Edition.

Rumors have been correct. Sony 900 does have less glare and better contrast than Sony 600.
