This was my fault, Notepad has a bug which falsely interprets some files as in the UTF-16 format which ends up displaying as Chinese characters. So you need a "real" text editor after all - then the TPZ0 will show up in all files. I did test Notpad, but only on one TOPAZ ebook and it worked in that case.

I use Cream, which adds an "Edit with" option to the right click menu. There probably are better options, but this one works.

These all have the characteristic "tell" on the Kindle web page of not listing the filesize under product details, for example:
Quote:
Product Details

* Format: Kindle Edition
* Print Length: 320 pages
* Publisher: Cumberland House Publishing (September 30, 1996)
* Sold by: Amazon Digital Services
* Language: English
* ASIN: B001HBI4BI
With an AZW ebook, there would typically be a "File Size:" before "Print Length. Checking the sample is a good idea if you really want the ebook, but if you are on the fence then no file size might be enough to indicate no sale.

Notepad++ is very good and it also adds an edit with option to your right clicks.

Another way to tell is bedies what you've mention is to go to the http://ebooks.addall.com/ search engine and you'll only find the book at Amazon. Topaz are eBooks that aren't available elsewhere.

Oh! I thought the file size meant after it was downloaded to the computer, not on the webpage. Thanks for pointing it out to me.
