The MobileRead wiki has a giant list of ebook retailers and the the formats they sell. If the retailer sells DRMed Mobi books that use the Overdrive servers, they can be KindleFIX'd to work on the Kindle

I'm quite happy with the Sony bookstore. Decent prices, decent selection. I like the way it is set up - I feel like I am actually rbowsing when I'm there.

I'd make that the non-amazon stores you can use to PURCHASE current releases.

Certain any non-DRM mobi or txt file will work on the Kindle.

So, anything not under copyright should be available for the Kindle, and not only obtainable from Amazon. If it is more recent, it will be drm and then if I owned a Kindle I would need Amazon.

However, if I owned the Sony I would just purchase a drm book from somewhere else?

or it simply isn't an ebook?

Not necessarily. Many many books are not available as ebooks drm'd or not. and Not all Epub released books are available as Kindle books and vice versa. The Current epub releases are generally available at multiple stores in AdobeDE DRM'd epub.

There are recent books that are not drm-ed, available for free or for a price, like from smashworks and other similar sites. However, these books are usually self-published ones. Not that there's anything wrong with that, you can find some really good reads at smashwords.

To summarize, anything without drm is available or can be readily converted to either kindle or sony. Public domain ebooks have no drm, self-published books and books by select few small publishing houses don't have drm.

For drm books (most commercial titles) you have to check availability. Some are both available in the amazon and the various epub stores, some are not. And some books don't come in ebook format at all.
