Don, are you using the latest Sony Library software and that no formatting on the device is necessary for LRF files?

Thanks.

Yes, I'm using the latest Library software. I have the 505.

Over the 1.5 years of using and loviing the 505, this occasionally happens. Once I figured it out, everything resolves itself OK. Remember, though, that I use lrf/lrx files only.

I think something has changed in the library software (in a very bad way).

I did a Format Internal Memory on my 505. The 505 says there are no books on the device.

I download Book A (LRF) from the library to the device. The 505 does a format on Book A first time I open it.

I download Book B (LRF) from the library to the device. The 505 does a format on Book B first time I open it.

Both A and B were opened in the Library software prior to downloading.

I delete B from the library software. Copy B from the 505 to Library software. delete B on the 505. Copy the B back to the 505. The 505 does a format on Book B. Open Book A on the 505 and the 505 does a format on Book A!

So it looks to me like whenever I transfer an LRF book from the Library to the 505, the 505 will want to reformat ALL books.

When I transfer Book C (EPub) from the library to the device, it appears as though no formatting is needed on the 505.

[Edit] I did some additional test and now no methods seems to pre-paginates and I am not sure why. Dr. Drib, could you add a book though (C) method below and see whether the book is pre-paginated?

(A) For those books in 'Library\Books', add it to a collection that syncs automatically with the reader.
(B) For those books in 'Library\Books', drag books to 'Reader' icon that appears when PRS machine is connected to USB.
(C) Using another file manager (e.g. Total Commander), drag books to 'Reader' icon in Reader Library software

No method seem to reliably pre-paginates with Reader Library 3.1.00.12040. (A) method sometimes results in pre-paginated book but sometimes not and I am not sure what is the condition.

I hope this is a unintentional mistake by Sony and hope this will be resolved in the next upgrade. If not, I will seriously consider downgrading regardless of whether Sony sells epub or not.

When I downloaded two EPUBs I had to reformat the LRF that I was currently reading, even though I'd done it once when I upgraded (I say that word tongue in cheek) the software...so for me, I'm having to reformat my LRFs everytime I add a new book even without a sync. THIS SUCKS!!!

I just tried (A) and didn't get any pre-pagination.

I did reformat internal memory. And I did get one crash while opening a book. I'm getting a lot (relatively) of crashes

I don't manually transfer (is that what you're doing?) Rather, I have sync turned on, so that when I plug in my device (Sony 505), it then transfers and syncs all the books - in the way they are arranged and ordered in the Library - over to the currently empty 505.

If I'm understanding you correctly, is this also what you've been doing?

Now I think Reader Library does not do any pre-pagination no matter what. In my previous test with (A), I thought I got the pre-pagination because I deleted the book and re-added through collection. So some pre-pagination information might have been left since I did not reformat the Reader.

About the crashes, from my experience, Reader tends to crash more often when it tries to pre-paginates really long books. I guess it has to do with resource limitation. For me, pre-pagination was the main advantage of using Reader Library over Calibre.

I really hope Sony can fix this problem soon.

I've never reformatted my drive on the 505. Rather, I just select EVERYTHING on the 505 and then cut/past it (temporarily) to the HD on my computer.

In general, I don't use the sync capabilities. I did try using sync, and I still had to do a repagination on the 505.

Don, your using version 3.1.00.12040 of the Sony library software?

I tries again. I just plugged the 505 into the computer, let it sync, and unplugged it. No files needed to be added/deleted/updated during the sync. And the 505 lost the pagination on all the books.

Don, you are checking for re-pagination on mutliple books? It looks like my 505 automatically re-paginates the last book I was reading (book for Continue Reading) when I disconnect the cable, so it is hard to tell that it actually repaginated.

I do check about 2-3 books after doing the procedure I've described, and they've all re-paginated perfectly.

Not-so-satisfactory solution by downgrading (arg...)

A. Problems with pre-pagination
Once I upgraded Sony software from previous version (eBook Library) to newer version (Reader Library) that supports epub version of their store,
- The program (Reader Library) no longer pre-paginates LRF file transfered to PRS-505. It means that new LRF books should be formatted with slow processor of PRS-505, sometimes resulting in crash and reboot.
- Even worse, if I add new books to the reader, all the paginated books lose the formatting all over again.
Since I prefer LRF over epub due to faster page turn, it was very annoying problem.

B. Unsuccessful effort
B1. PRS-505 was not the source of the problem.
I have an older version (2.5.00.09170) of program (eBook Library) in Vista machine and newer version (Reader Library) in XP machine. Using older software on Vista, I could add LRF to PRS-505 without any problem of losing formatting. The tranferred files were all properly pre-paginated. So the problem is with the software or computer but not PRS-505.

B2. Re-installing recent version did not help.
Since I upgraded software without uninstalling the previous version, I tried clean install Reader Library without success. I uninstalled the software, removed uncessary files, reinstalled the most recent version, but the problem was still there.

C. Downgrading
As a result, I decided to uninstall the newer version and downgrade to an older version (2.5.00.09170) of Sony library software (eBook Library). Now I don't have problem with prepagination or losing formatting.

However, please follow the procedure to avoid some problems.

0. Back up all the books. In my case, I liberated all epub books and save the copies in a separate directory. I have no plan to buy books from Sony unless this problem is fixed.

1. Deauthorize the current computer from Reader Library program. If you do not do this, the same computer will stay authorized multiple times, wasting the slots allowed for authorization.

2. Uninstall software (Reader Library) using control panel

3. Remove unnecessary files according to the following post.
https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40987
When this step was skipped, older version of ebook library did not show left-hand side menu (Library/Status/ebook Store/Local Drive...) properly once installed.

4. Reboot if you would like and install the older version of Sony ebook library.

D. Disclaimer
I contacted several members and I know that some of them do not have any problem of pre-pagination with the recent version of Reader Library. So, try downgrading only if you
- Have the same problem as I do
- Use LRF heavily,
- Do not buy from Sony store

If someone figures out how to pre-paginates LRF using the recent software without any problem, please let us know. For now, I will just stick with the older version of the software.

I just went thru a round with Sony tech support. No luck. What they had me do:

Try a different USB port
Asked if I did a reset
Had me uninstall/reinstall the software
Had me restart the computer

I gave up at this point. They wanted to uninstall/reinstall in safe mode and do a hard reset. If that didn't work, they would put me in touch with theSoftware/reader library people (who I thought I was talking to all along).

After the first reinstall, the first time I plugged the reader in it was fine, but subsequently, I had the same problems.

I'm going to try a hard reset of the reader.

Hard reset didn't help, and now I can't transfer my LRX books to my reader.
