Unhappy

For the questions:
  • Nope, I do NOT have an SD card inserted, but I am planning on

Today:
  • I did the complete drain / charge cycle this night. (From Wed to Thursday)
  • Shut it off completely after charging
  • Turned it on Thursday evening, and lost 1 bar after 20 pages (!)
  • Turned on the MP3 player on very loud (to drain again) and it drained to 2 bars in 5 minutes
  • Turned off the MP3 player
  • Read another 20 pages, then turned on the MP3 again
  • Have the MP3 running for about 1 hour now, still 2 bars

Summary:
So far, things seem to be (slightly) improving, but only in the lower reaches, but maybe it is my imagination that would like this to succeed.

I will do the complete charge / discharge cycle a few times over the weekend and see if it gets any better.

If not, a return it is.

Returning it today.

After charging, it immediately jumps down to 3 bars.

Returned it to the store.

They have to send it in, Sony Switzerland reserves 10 days until answer.

Sorry to hear it had to go back but it wasn't working as it should be. Hope it doesn't put you off!

Naah, but I am seriously miffed about Sony product support.

I called them and to call their "ebook expert" rude would be a compliment.
This was confirmed by the store employee who said she had to deal with them and had nothing but bad experiences.

Also, having to wait for a device that I have just bought 6 days ago, instead of getting an immediate replacement is also not the greatest experience.

Keep in mind that this thing costs 450$ here in Switzerland.

any memory card bigger than 1 gb is too big for the reader. you can use them, but the more you put on them, the longer needs the reader to get through them and the longer it takes to start it.
and that takes a lot of battery.
btw - compared to the size of 1000 ebooks (aprox. 1 GB) - bigger cards seems like taking a bazooka for shooting birds

I'm not sure about this.

I mean: I have copied everything that was on the card to the reader's internal memory, and it's now 9 times faster, even though I still have access to all of the files that were on the SD card.

It might be that Class-4 is not high enough or some other compatibility problem.

I think I'll buy a Memory Stick Pro Duo. This standard was created by Sony, and I'll purchase one that was produced by sony.

No memory card was involved.

I have been following this thread and thinking my 600 is doing fine on it's battery life. Then, it went from 4 bars to no bars overnight. I do a lot of reading, and usually charge it about once a week and get around 3000 t0 4000 page turns. I did a full charge and have read around 300 pages since. It has been a very cold night and I wonder if the battery is temperature sensitive. Charging it up now and I will see how the life is from here.

Battery life seems to vary between us. I get nowhere near 4000 pages, but a lot more than Zielperson. I would estimate at between a book and a book and a half between charges, so probably between 1 & 1500 pages. Though, to be honest I rarely let it get down below two bars. I'll charge it fully this weekend and count how many I get out of it.

Out of all the Sony Readers I have owned (going back to the Librie), I have never had a device that in any way lasts as long as Sony makes out it should.

Zielperson: Yours is definitely defective. I'm just saying that IMO, the battery life is not as good as it says on the box.

I would be interested in seeing a poll that reflects how long people are getting out of their batteries.

Yes, I have it returned and will see how Sony Switzerland deals with it.

From what I gathered, Sony authorized bookdealers in the US to just replace the device, and I was pretty miffed having to send in an unit I just bought 6 days before.

I have to say that the battery life is an issue with my 600 as well. I charged it overnight by mains on monday night and have read about 350-400 pages and half of the battery is gone already after just using it Tuesday and today... my old 505 ( which has since died but that is another story) used to hold a charge for about 2 weeks. I did get my e-reader when I was back home in the states, so now that I am back in England returning it isn't an option. I have had it only about 2 weeks and this is a second problem that I have come across since having it, my first issue is that i can't authorise my reader on my Mac. So far I am not happy with this model and would happily go back to my 505 if that one was still functioning.

...Will post here again if this has fixed it completely(so another 6-7 days hopefully).
So its been almost a week and I've got ~1000 pages read and the battery indicator has only dropped one bar. I'm guessing that if none of the solutions in the thread about battery problems works, it might be the same problem as mine. Which would either mean sending it back to Sony or just popping it open and disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting to see if that works.

I have had my 600 for just over a month and for the first two weeks couldnt tell how much I was using as it was plugged in all the time as i was loading it up with books etc.
Since I have got my books on it I used it about 2-3 hours a day for around 10 days until it got down to 0 bars and then it said battery low but i still got about 700 page turns before it turned off so as long as it continues in that vein i will be happy

I've got the same battery problems that zeilperson has. Exactly. I'm lucky if I get 300 page turns. I returned my first Sony reader due to this problem and they sent me a 'refurbished' one. I've had it for 4 days and it is behaving exactly the same way. About 150 page turns and I'm at half-battery. I don't expect to get 7000 page turns but boy, 1000 would be nice.

When I received this refurbished reader, I charged it using the ac charger. I was so excited that I'd be able to read an entire book without having to recharge but no luck. I am in the middle of trying to return this refurbished one - waiting for 'tech support' to call me back. They'd better pay shipping this time or it'll be on ebay for an extreme discount.
