The current furor/confusion/anger over geographical restrictions over sales of ebooks could probably lead to ebook "Pen Pals" - someone in the US wants an ebook only for sale to UK residents, and someone in the UK wants an ebook only for sale to US residents. Criss-cross! They (legally) buy the other person's book, deDRM it, and swap. Depending on the country, the deDRM may be illegal. BUT - there are 2 legal sales that pay the author, publisher, & distributor. And 2 happy readers.
Sort of an electronic bartering system. |

But the original questioner wanted to read a specific book. The fact that there are half a million other books he could read doesn't solve his problem.

Correct. But I think the main problem is that this particular book seems to be ONLY available on amazon, and ONLY for the north american market.
Still waiting for the iPhone kindle app to be available in Austria, too. Seems to me like amazon is discriminating against Lederhosen and Schnitzel too. And I still haven't found a proxy server that lets me pretend to be american ![]() |

Hi!
This is my first post in this great forum. I'm in Portugal and I've already bought a couple of kindle ebooks only available for the US registered users of the Kindle. First of all you need to associate an US address to your Kindle account. As they say in "manage you Kindle / Your Country": "If you're moving, you can change the country associated with your Kindle account." So edit your address and create a new one. Just find a real US address (I guess that Apple stores, Hotels and Embassies are the favourite ones) and use it. After that just change your default address to the US one. Find the book (and there it is at $9,99!) and buy it. On the delivery option choose "Transfer via Computer" and then select your Kindle name when asked "to choose to which device to send your purchase to". After the purchase (and don't worry if your credit card does not have a US address) you'll be able to download the book on "Manage you Kindle". Then return to your default address. I don't feel I'm doing anything illegal. I'm not paying international Whispernet, but because I'm not using it. Maybe it is disputable if I'm infringing the author's rights because I'm reading the book in Europe. But couldn't I do it if a friend brought me the paperback edition or send it to me? Hope that helps! Best regards, António Carlos Matos |

Thanks for the hint ... my parents still own a house in Canada, so finding an address would not be a problem. I was looking for a way to purchase with an Austrian credit card, but it seems like that might not be an issue.

STILL haven't done the spoofing thing, because I fail to find american proxy servers. I guess my last bet will be acmatos' tipp. |

Amazon only sells books where the publishers have the legal ebook rights and have chosen to let Amazon sell it. It's not like they are refusing to sell it to you out of spite. I'm sure they'd be happy to take your money if they could do so without the risk of a lawsuit. It's a corporation as greedy as any other. I bring this up because if you feel like complaining to someone that might have a chance of making things better, that someone is the publisher. Maybe one email or letter won't make much difference but if they keep hearing from customers about their titles, maybe they'll get their collective butts in gear.
