How do you propose to re-install the firmware without a SD card?

That's a good question, Shaggy; I was noodling everything I could think of, and not really thinking. As I said, I think it is a hardware problem, and was just trying to consider possibilities. Likewise with my edit; slim chance that formatting the card with the DR might work, but a possibility, even if remote.

My confusion about the Chinese fees is from the fact that the broken DR1000S that I bought from China shipped for less than $30.00 US, with the only problem being that the Chinese mail would not insure a broken device. It arrived with a fully charged battery; no testing or duty charges. (It shipped from Beijing.)

I hope this thing works out well.

Regarding my statement that the DR uses only FAT 16

Again, Shaggy is correct. Last Saturday morning I checked my SD cards and found that only the 1 GB cards from iRex were FAT 16; my other (larger) cards were FAT 32. Using the DR, I formatted an original (iRex labeled) card and a 16 GB card—both cards formatted to 1 GB, FAT 16.

It occurred to me that pakiyabhai's problem arose after he had formatted his card, and I wondered if that may have been an issue (I also wondered if he had tried another card in the DR). I reformatted both cards on my Mac, the iRex card to 1 GB Fat 16, the other to 16 GB FAT 32. Both cards worked fine in the DR. I then reformatted the 16 GB card, this time formatting the logical drive instead of the card itself; the card would not mount on the Mac. I inserted the card into my DR, several times, with no response from the DR. After several attempts, I got the card to mount on the Mac, and was able to reformat the card itself (the physical drive), after which it worked fine again.

So: the DR will only format FAT 16 (with a 1 GB limit) but will read FAT 16 and 32.

pakiyabhai, have you tried another (pre-formatted) card? Is it possible that you formatted the logical drive, and not the physical drive? I'm sorry that I didn't get back sooner on this, but I have been quite busy.

Thanks for the reply. There is some fault with the drive and irex has agreed to take care of it now. So I am just about to give it to them for repairs.

This is a known issue. Officially, the DR does not support SDHC cards (aka 4GB and up). Unofficially, SDHC cards work fine but you can not format them on the DR. If you format it on a PC as FAT32, then the DR will recognize it fine.

I join your rank too, pakiyabhai. My 1000s refuses to read any SD card the THIRD day after I got the reader. I am very mad now. The worst thing is that I am in China too!! Is Irex dispatching a batch of faulty products? The worst consumer product I've encountered, it's even worse than Xbox 360.

Today I have finally recieved my repaired Digital Reader back , it works and as I mentioned they repaired it for free.

I had to bear the transportation cost , which costed me $75 , but it included them sending the box to me , taking it , repariing it and sending it back to me . Considering it would cost me $120+ to just send the box 1 way , I am so happy with their service.

Thank you irex ,

@jjww717 , contact irex , if you have just bought the reader they woiuld repair it for free, considering , mine was used for 1 year plus !
