From looking (and checking) the books on the Kindles two friends have. (One of which is shortly being sold as a direct result). They're both into...hm... romantic and historical novels.

Perhaps they're all from the same publisher, and that publisher has disabled TTS? As I say, no problems at all with any of my Kindle books (not that TTS is something I'd actually want to use!).
