Thanks Kris. Looks like the ePaper screens have a really nice black to them. The white is more like grey/green but that is probably easier to read against anyway. I always put my iPhone in grey on black mode to read on.

Gotta say I'm tempted, for gifts at the least, especially with the new firmware.

I was able to pick up the Aluratek Libre for $137 from Newegg through their Black Friday Sale (price is once again $179.99). And this is not a stripped down model, I received the case, hand strap, 100 ebooks on a 2GB SD card, etc.

As soon as I get the Libre charged I'll flash the firmware and try an ADE from my local library, Dexter By Design.

Hmm...electronic paper is a vague descriptor that includes EPDs like e-ink, monochrome LCD like that in the JetBook, electrowetting like Liquivista, etc. rather than a specific brand.

Actually epaper should only be used for bistable implementations and it is misused by Aluratek and IMHO misleading. The screen is reflective LCD. See the our wiki for the difference.

I got the ADE to work and it flows nicely. Personally, after using a true eInk screen the reflective LCD is a let down but the device is smaller and cheaper than my other dedicated reading devices so it could be a good choice for many.
