The first one I read on my own volition was "Pride and Prejudice"... Not an easy one...

I hate to say it, but Dan Brown's books. They are easy to read with not a lot of complicated sentences. (Ducks and runs for cover...)

I liked Da Vinci Code. I even bought Illustrated Edition

To each its own.

No need to hide - it's not a bad suggestion at all. They're as page turners with short chapters, and as you say, the language is not too complicated.

Hello,

So far i've only read snow crash (suggested by this thread) and i'm about to finish the lost symbol (missing the last 30 pages or so). I haven't had great problems to understand this books, but i don't know anything about how the translations of Stieg Larssons books are (nor in german, neighter in english).

Next book on my list would be the first book of Stieg Larsson, but im not sure whether i should read it in english, or better read it in my native language (german).

Is it a good idea trying to read the first book of Stieg Larsson in english, or is it written at a rather high level (to high for me)?

Dick Francis writes in using English that is very easy to understand for beginners.
He also happens to write great thrillers.

I remember having to read "Day of the Jackal" in my grade 11 ESL class oh so many years ago So this might be a good choice for improving English. I vaguely recall it being a thriller/suspense story.
