Well I managed to finagle a Windows laptop and installed the Sony software. Now I know why people whinge about it - it's complete rubbish! I can't believe you can only purchase books from the Sony ebook website using their software. That's so 90's! Anyway managed to download the freebie books and transferred them over to my Mac and imported into Calibre. Lovely.

Will need to check their freebies out regularly now. Thanks for the heads up.

I 'd be interested to know if that works because ebooks downloaded from the Sony Store are encoded to only work with computers and devices authorised to your account.

Bummer!!! Well in that case I'll have to borrow back the netbook I borrowed from a friend when I get my Sony reader to authorise it and transfer the books over. Hope that works. That is such a PITA.

Just tried viewing them in Calibre on the Mac and it fired up the Sony eBook Library software, which promptly did nothing as usual... BTW have not been able to get v3 working on either a Leopard or a Snow Leopard Mac, even after doing all the suggested tricks etc. What a load of rubbish...

Oh well, maybe for my sanity I'm better off avoiding the Sony store. Although, when they do change over to the epub format, will I be able to redownload these books as epub's? Will I still have the same problems as in authorisation etc? <sigh>

Actually after reading this thread Lrx on Calibre, it appears that I only have to authenticate my Sony 505 once to the Sony store, and anything else I download and transfer via Calibre will read fine as it will be encoded for my reader. Can someone please confirm this?

I get that problem once in a while, so I close the Sony book store and start over. Then it usually goes to the home page after that. Wish I had a trick I could share with you!

I had this problem once on a poor internet connection. Are you on wireless?
