To be fair they are not the only ones that had issues with their roll outs. Not going to harp on the Kindle... so another one...

Cool-er was delayed a good two weeks on its roll out. So I suppose we could look at this as at least its only being delayed a week?

The week isn't up yet to say it's only delayed a week....

To me the issue is not the limited supply, but the fact that there doesn't seem to be evidence they really exist at all. My guess is that either the lawsuit, other pending legal action, or a major problem in production models is delaying shipment again. Perhaps B&N has found a major issue in Android or on the readers itself in testing the production models and doesn't want to put thousands of bricks out there, so it is figuring out a software patch.

But with each passing day as we approach Christmas, my decision is leaning toward SONY or Amazon. I realize that even if it was out today, there could still be issues with the nook, but I don't want to ask for B&N giftcards or money toward it and then be stuck with a $260 paperweight.

First off, if B&N is delaying the sending out the nook because they found software issues I commend them for doing so. I do not want a device with problems that is on time - I would rather wait for the fix, which if it is software then the delay should not be long...

As far as going for a Sony or Kindle, that is an option if they meet your needs. I find the nook a promising device and the basic feature set is what I have been looking for, so I can wait. Christmas means more than me getting an electronic device...

There is at least some evidence. Apparently, Ellen Degeneres just dropped a bunch of them on her audience. If those are, indeed, live units, as the audio seems to indicate, those whose shipments have been delayed are likely to be a bit miffed.

When I clicked to enter the contest to win the day's prizes, it said that the audience received gift cards for the Barnes and Noble nook. So, it may be that Ellen gave the wrong impression?

I can't hear what Ellen says on the video. She says "It's not available in stores yet but...." and then the end is drowned out by audience squealing.

Yeah it kind of cracked me up that she was holding it upside down though.

I'm sure people are disappointed, but I'd cut B&N some slack-I'm sure they are just as upset as everyone else that they couldn't get the Nook out the door for the Xmas shopping season. Shipping hardware is incredibly difficult. Shipping a brand new technology is even more difficult. Shipping to meet the Xmas season-incredibly difficult. Shipping your first real hardware product with a brand new technology in time for Xmas is just insane.

there is not that much difference in the actual function of the device. all of that should have been resolved weeks before the release was even announced. but as has already been discovered, my expectations of professional ethics seems to be contrary to the viewing public that is content to sit back and be screwed over

Boo freakin' hoo people! Give me a break! Barnes and Noble is not trying to screw anyone or being lazy, or whatever. Doing something like that at Christmas time is merchant suicide, and they KNOW IT. They KNOW they're losing business to Amazon. They KNOW people are miffed, and they don't like it either. Everyone has known for a good while now that the readers won't be shipped until January. Until then, everyone quit acting like spoiled 3 year olds, read an ebook on that computer of yours that you keep posting here on, and shut the heck up about it! Geeze! We get it! You're mad! Ooo, look at the mad posters on the 'Net!

Be patient. It will be worth your wait and all the other folks with the other e-readers will be jealous and you can brag about your new toy then. Until then, enjoy the season that is upon us! Lighten up and have some fun.

I was at B/N today to return gifts that I bought there yesterday. Turned out that Amazon had them at half the price of B/N markup. Ugk!!

Anyway - I asked about the Nook. The manager was very flustered, they're just as upset as everyone else it seems. But she told me that they won't be arriving in my store as a display model or to sell until the second week in January.
