I'm just tried the dictionary out on my CyBook Gen3. I'm glad to say that it works there without a problem. A very good price for a good dictionary.
Note that I didn't even have to do any fiddling with DRM - this dictionary has none. It just works. |

First, here are the instructions for setting the default dictionary:
1. In the home screen, press "Menu". 2. Press "Settings". 3. Press "Menu" again. 4. Select "Change Primary Dictionary" and press enter. 5. Select the dictionary that you want as your default and press enter. Done. Quote:
So far, I have not been including DRM in the books I sell, trusting people not to post the files on torrents. P.S. Please don't forget to leave feedback on Amazon. I know people pay attention to that stuff. Last edited by osnova; 12-01-2009 at 11:36 AM. |

Well Osnova you've done it again
![]() I hope you see a lot of profit from your hard work. Thanks! Wow, that baby really takes a long time to download, to the PC OR Whispernet! Last edited by Rootman; 12-01-2009 at 03:06 PM. |

LOL. You don't know half of it. It took me forever to upload the dictionary to Amazon. Then their system could not process it. It took them over a month to figure out how to process such a huge file. I was about to give up and just delete this publication.

Oh, I forgot. Thanks for the lack of DRM too - I occasionally take a peek at books using Calibre reader and appreciate the fact your books are NOT DRM'd.
I can't see anyone ripping you off by sharing it illegally the prices are so low. Even if they did I doubt they would ever buy it anyway. |

I'd like to hear if people find this dictionary useful in their daily reading, writing. I would also appreciate suggestions for improvement.

I really like your dictionary. It's neat to able to see all the variations and related words. I'm not a writer but I can see how this could easily assist writers.
Also left a short positive review on Amazon. |

I just bought this last night.
As a stand-alone dictionary for someone who is a writer, it seems like a very useful one. Unfortunately, as a replacement for the Kindle dictionary, it doesn't work as well, at least for me. It's mainly due to the lack of pronunciation transcriptions, which is a huge drawback, methinks. Huge enough, to make me go right back to the dictionary that came with the Kindle. How did the Palm version get pronunciation transcriptions? Also, it seems to be lacking definitions for a lot of fairly common words, which was surprising. This is all based on just a few minutes with the dictionary, maybe I am missing something. Last edited by Sonist; 12-10-2009 at 02:56 PM. |

Thank you for your thoughts.
This is the 3rd version of WordNet from folks at Princeton. They are constantly expanding their database. If you find that some words are missing, you may want to report which to them. Note that they do not include in their database certain parts of speech (articles, pronouns, etc.) by design. The transcription is not part of WordNet. I can only assume that the Palm version has taken transcription from somewhere else and merged it with WordNet. By the way I prefer IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) transcription and the only dictionary for Kindle that I know using IPA is the Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's Dictionary. They cleverly use pictures for those IPA symbols that are not supported by the Kindle. If you need transcription then MWALD may be for you. |

This is a good dictionary, perhaps most useful for a writer, since it has many of the features of a thesaurus, which for a wordsmith, may be an advantage over a "regular" dictionary. The definitions are clear and overall not unlike the New Oxford American Dictionary, which comes with the Kindle. For me, the lack of transcription (and word origins,) makes it less useful for simple word look up on the Kindle. Last edited by Sonist; 12-14-2009 at 08:19 PM. |

Unfortunately, having chosen this delivery method, apparently it's not possible to delete it from the delivery queue short of asking for a refund from Amazon (and then purchase again to deliver to my computer this time). Looks like I'll have to do that, as I would otherwise have to travel 20 miles to a 3G zone and hang out there (for probably the better part of an hour probably?) until the download possibly succeeds in a reasonable amount of time. In the meantime, I downloaded it to my computer (with 5Mbps connection) and moved it over via USB. I like it! Just looking forward to getting my delivery queue unclogged... ---------- ALSO, someone on the Amazon Kindle forums mentioned that this was available from the princeton site in prc format, and was only about 20MB. What accounts for the difference in size between that and the edition on Kindle store? Thanks! |

All I can say is wow. Amazon should do something about those queues. The Kindle should be able to tell that the file is already in the memory (through your computer) and stop attempting to obtain it through Whispernet. I guess we have uncovered some glitches.
---- I have not seen Princeton's prc file. Could you give a link? I can only speculate that it does not contain all the databases (includes only dictionary definition plus maybe synonyms) or does not have cross-references. Or is based on WordNet 2. One article covers multiple headwords (instead of having article per headword). Or just gives text without any formatting (tags eat space too). I have seen another WordNet 2 (not 3) prc that is available here on mobileread for free. All I can say, my version is much better. |
