I must respectfully disagree; I've been using touch-screen devices for 20-odd years, right from the original Palm machines, have never used a screen protector, and have never had a scratched screen.

The key thing is never, ever, to leave the stylus lying around. Take it out of its slot, use it, then put it back again. What scratches screens is getting bits of hard grid embedded in the soft plastic of the stylus tip.

I went to my local electronics store, Best Buy, this afternoon. They had the PRS-300 and the PRS-600 or better known as the 'Touch'. I had previously owned a Sony 505 and have also the new Kindle-DX.

FWIW, the Sony 300 was not any faster than the 505 and both seemed easier to read than the 600. The 'glare' is not that big a deal, but I would prefer a more 'non-glare' screen. I was coming up on my 30 days with Amazon on the Kindle-DX, but think I am going to keep it and pass on the Sonys. The 600 is very fast, with buttons or finger, (actually wicked fast), but with the latest upgrade on the Kindle-DX and the improved PDF flow w/ font adjustment and wireless, it is just a good package. Yes it costs more, but it will be just $89 more than the new 900 coming out and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about the 'touch screen' and 'glare' since the 900 will have both.

Many will be very happy with the speed of the 600 and I assume the 900 will be fast as well. 'Glare' will bother some and not others, but I just did not want to fool with it. I guess, after more thought, I have never before had to think about 'glare' since everything else, (Iliad, Sony 505, and Kindle-DX), is all matte surfaces. The more I tried the 900, the more I thought about it and did not want to be preoccupied with the angle of the reader. Having said that, the speed of the Sony 600 smokes everything else I've seen.

I'm reading the words, but they aren't making sense. You've been using resistive screens for 20 years but you somehow think that the stylus for a resistive screen has a soft tip? Please provide a link showing me where to find a soft-tipped stylus designed to work with a resistive touch screen. While you're at it, got a link to a hard-tipped stylus designed to work with a capacitive screen? Make it a stylus(hard or soft) that comes to a nice point too - for the capacitive that is, my wife would like one for her iphone.

The stylus on my Clie is definitely plastic.

I thought the whole point (pun intended) of an iphone was that you didn't need a stylus.

It would be. I know, of course, that a soft-tipped stylus isn't used with a resistive screen. It would make it impossible to use for handwriting, drawing and gestures.

edit: For most people that's true. For women with long fingernails a capacitive screen doesn't work out that well.

Ugh, Gizmodo.. They couldn't find the Apple logo and put it on the non-buy list..

Every once in a while I hit their page to remind me why I visit Engadget.

I worried about the reflective glare before I first bought the 600, but since then I've used it every night, used it on a plane (both during the daytime and at night) and used it during bright sunlight. I don't notice the glare and if I do, I just turn it slightly.
For me, the screen glare is a non-issue.

I absolutely love my prs-600 and I completely forget about the glare unless something possesses me to compare it to my 505 (which I now use only for comics). When I do this, I am disappointed for about five minutes, then get over it. The prs-600 screen is still a million times better than a computer screen for reading, and no good as a mirror, as experiments have proven . And the usability - the speed, the dictionary, the note-taking, the book-like page-turning! Yes, with a clearer screen it would be perfect, but it is close to perfect just as it is.
