I have several EInk devices, but the one I use day in and day out is the EZ Reader Basic with OpenInkPot. There are two disadvantages to this for beginners: a) only DRM-free ebooks are supported and b) SSH is used for file transfers. These are actually advantages for "experts", since stripping DRM is the only way to be sure of keeping your ebooks and SSH is better than mounting USB filesystems. I think the Pocket Pro is better than the Basic with the standard firmware (which is similar on both), but the availability of the OpenInkPot firmware is a huge plus for the Basic.
Interesting...Well, I mean, I'm not exactly an amateur as far as doing certain...things...on a computer, so I imagine that learning to strip DRM's from ebooks wouldn't be too difficult to learn. I'm not really sure how SSH works though, so that might be an issue.

Sony supports epub (DRM free and Adobe DRM'ed), so any ebook store that has epub books will work. In addition, everything except the Kindle is moving toward support for epub as the standard. Adobe DRM is the only DRM currently used on epub books to my knowledge. Barnes and Nobel is going to be selling EPUB with their own DRM sometime after the release of their nook ebook reader but Adobe will be including this DRM in their software in the future (currently Adobe software is used to read DRM'ed epub books on all devices that support them to my knowledge). The nook is suposed to be "released" tomorrow but it is already on back order into January from pre-orders at this point. If you are not in a hurry, you may want to check it out in the store (demo units are supposed to show up in the stores tomorrow, I would expect that they should have them by the end of the weak at the latest).
