BeBook? Do you mean BBeB books? (LRX files) that you bought at the Sony store?

Next month they are converting to ePub and you will be able to re-download them in that format.

For my reader, or my wife's.

I'll be calling their customer disservice department tomorrow.
The UPS email came in with "LRC Backstage Pass" as the sender, so you might want to check your spam filter if you have one.

I should also note that the popup label from the Sony site was there, but the top was cut off. The UPS email had a link with a label that was complete.

I agree with kacir, I'm also outside the USA. I now have two PRS-505s but the Mother-in-law still has the PRS500, I'm not looking forward to breaking the news!

Read the whole thing, those who doubt that they cannot get their firmware upgraded outside the US need not fear!

I would probably go for $75 off 500->600 if the deal was available in the UK...

I'm going with the upgrade.

I used the custom hacks for a while nd reverted on the next firmware upgrade. IMHO the best of the hacks were the clock and the new icons. I wear a watch and found the clock distracting. I spend much more time reading than looking at the menus so the new icons, while nice, are not major.

This is a great offer from Sony. (Support for a three-year old piece of consumer electronics.!)

I don't understand why they don't allow users to install the firmware themselves rather then having to ship the units off...

Surely it would be cheaper for Sony, quicker for customers and allow users globally to get the ePub support.

Why ship it off???

Possibly it's a more complicated upgrade than plug in-->run software-->unplug.

Or there's a chance for a high rate of failure or user error, and they figure it's cheaper to do it themselves than it is to man customer service and go through the troubleshooting steps over the phone with a non-computer savvy consumer.

Dear Sony: Please match up your "repair confirmation" email text with your "upgrade your 500" program.

Everyone else: yes, I just received a repair confirmation email from Sony (note that this is a separate email from the UPS confirmation email) that makes little sense given the terms of their upgrade. I'm going ahead with it anyway, but, geez, how hard is it to write a standard email that fits the situation?

(Sorry for the blow-by-blow of this but in the past it has helped me when others have done it, so I'm giving it a try myself.)

Well, part of the question is why wasn't it available in the first place? And why aren't drivers for the Mac, Win7 and Win64bit available?

I suspect it requires hardware work, not just simple firmware flashing. Maybe a new EPROM, CPU, or extra RAM added to the device. The latter two being welcome additions.

I would like to know more about what the upgrade entails before I make the jump (I didn't vote).

Anyone know if this update will allow the 500 to be used with 64-bit Vista and Windows 7. If so, I'm definitely going for the update. If not, I'm not so sure.

I use both. I'm typing this on my MacBook. I simply forgot that the newer software supports Mac OS X as well.

So yeah. Any chance of 64-bit Vista, Windows 7, or Mac support?

The switch and update is definitely welcome even after this long period of having the PRS-500. I'm hoping/thinking that there is some sort of hardware change involved since that was supposedly the reason why they never updated the 500's firmware with the 505's a while back.

I'm just worried what will happen if something goes wrong with the process....new/refurb 505 instead?

I am very pleased with Sony and this update. I was waiting to see what they would do with it; if they had abandoned the PRS-500 altogether, I wouldn't have bought any other Sony reader.

Now I am going to wait for the PRS-900. I suspect the trade-in offer will be extended to the PRS-900 once it is released ($50 for the PRS-300, $75 for the PRS-600, and $100 for the PRS-900. Isn't that a nice symmetry? .) If I like the PRS-900's screen, I might go for the trade in. If not, I'll probably send my PRS-500 to be updated.
