comparing prs-600 vs kindle 2

The sony software has been stable for me (I'm using it on XP). I just wish it had more features (like nested folders and/or tagging of books; views that are sortable, etc). Also I dont think the way syncing works is very intuitive, at least initially. Maybe some of these will be fixed/added in future versions. Its been stable though.

Would calibre allow me to download and view my prs-600 annotations the way the sony software does?

For the record, this afternoon I had a chance to play with a "kindle 2" side-by-side with my prs-600. I was a bit apprehensive cuz I didnt know if I'd suddenly be gripped by buyer's remorse or something. A friend at work brought in her kindle 2, I'd never played with one before.

The good news: No buyers remorse! yay, so I wont be returning my prs-600 after the kindle encounter, lol.

But I confess it was touch-and-go for a few minutes. Why? Cuz the kindle screen is better, there's no doubt. Ie, its clearer, more contrast, and less glare. Noticably. Its a sweet screen. Of course, thats in part because it doesnt have that touch screen plastic layer on it.

Of course I wish I could get the clarity of the kindle screen on the sony, but probably that will have to wait for a year or two.

But after playing with the "Kindle 2"'s UI for a few minutes, I have to say I much preferred the sony's touchscreen UI. Despite all its imperfections, I honestly felt the sony UI was easier to use than the kindle's. I mean the kindle's UI is not bad at all, I cant really fault it in any specific way, its just a feeling based on my tastes and YMMV. (Of course there are other reasons too for me to pick the sony, like easy annotations and more storage and file formats).

SO for now, for me anyway, sony hardware features beat out kindle's slightly better screen.

I am one of them. Never a crash on my Vista machine. And I work it to death, sync'ing to both cards and internal memory, lots of books and magazines.

You can get the Kindle or better screen on a Sony, they are called the Sony PRS-505 and Sony PRS-300. Of course, you would lose a lot of what you like about the 600 in the transition.

Try sorting your books by date order - they won't even be in the correct order.

No, certainly not everybody, but you were portraying the situation as though everybody had horrendous problems with the Sony eBook Library software. The reality of the situation is that a small number of people are having problems, while for the overwhelming majority it works OK.

Great tip about the spray-will have to look for that.

As for the software, when I did have major issues with it,it seems (now looking back in retrospect),part of it was user error, the latter part was due to issues with the reader.I now run the current version of the software on XP,Vista Business and onmy Mac,with no problems at all.

I was recently considering getting a kindle 2,still not totally off that idea-I ended up getting a touch instead.I am glad I didn't get the kindle 2 when I was considering it,as just after the international version was released, and that makes it significantly more appealing...to some degree.

I did get to try one in person, a friend has one.I'm going to hold out to see what the nook holds....I agree about the screen,of the now three sony readers I have owned,I still prefer the screen of the 505, but some of the features of the 700 (and now 600 that I own) were worth it to me in the long run,in the future I expect eventually the features I preferred from the devices will be in one device...or at least I can hope. Also, not sure if I can borrow books from the NYPL with the kindle, like I do with the sonys...
