To clarify I'm not trying to legitimize these pirates. But not only is there the risk of innocents being caught in the cross fire, someone has to pay to enforce these laws. Ultimately that someone is the consumer/tax payer. Why should we pay, both literally and with our civil liberties, if there was no actual loss?

I'd say there is a material difference, between endangering lives while behind the wheel, and downloading last night's episode of Lost for your own use.

Illegal? Yes. But certainly not justifying the government, or private companies, peeking into what we do on the Internet.

As to the suggested "liberalization" of already accepted practices, it's like the benevolent government allowing drinking beer in your own home on Sunday....
