Wow this is an interesting development. There must be some very strong terms and penalties in contracts between Amazon and publishers for Amazon to be so pedantic about this.

I also spend time overseas so I wonder how long until I get a similar email.

Weird. I was just going to post about a message I received from Amazon concerning my location. But my message was more to my benefit:
Quote:
Good News! You saved $2.00 on your purchase

Kindle edition prices differ by country. The price for this Kindle edition is different from the price we originally displayed. This is because you were not signed in when you purchased this item. Since the price in your country was lower than the price originally displayed, we went ahead and completed your purchase.
I purchased the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell e-book (so I don't have to lug around the massive hardback I bought when I thought the e-book wasn't available). I'll never know if hanging around in Japan would eventually raise eyebrows because I'm leaving today to separate from the navy (whoo!).

Not what I hoped for but I find myself purchasing from Amazon only on impulse when not at my computer and for the rest, the most part, I purchase from other stores and then load the books to my Kindle. Cheaper and I have found that the Kindle is more strict on geographic locations than many other stores. I am sure Amazon must be facing harsh penalties over geographic locations.

Sigh, I spend almost as much time looking for ways around the idiocy of ebook copyright laws and restrictions as I do reading.

Yes, Amazon is tracking IPs in the Kindle store. Probably started since the launch of the International Kindle. One browser I use has cookies which associate to my Amazon account; when I open another browser to their site just to look for books and prices, it immediately assumes my region as Latin America. Even when I change it to US, after some time it changes back. This was probably implemented to make buying simpler, as the user can immediately see what's available for his region, without trying to buy a book and only at the end seeing it's not available.

However, I have a US address in my account and I can change my Kindle's country to the US in order to buy books not available in my region. I have done this, a lot of people are doing this (there's even a how-to in the forums at Amazon).

So I don't think Amazon will do anything, its system just "noticed" you were buying from a different country and suggested the change; this was probably automated.

I'm with the guy who said just leave your wireless off and get books from places other than Amazon, where available.

Maybe they will eventually realize that all those people who bought Kindles are not buying very many books from them...

Hmm... Can you fake your IP address by logging in via a U.S.-based Proxy/Anonymous web site?

Why I like my 505 so much.... so many books, so
little time. Specially time for some big brother type
looking over my shoulder.

So any update?

As I understand it you have a Kindle2 (like me ) as well as being a U.S. Citizen with a U.S Bank Account/credit card and residence and purchase all your books by download to computer.

I don't see how there can be any problem with that (other than if you are not able to purchase the books due to geographic restrictions). Many U.S. Citizens work outside the U.S. - Diplomats, military, etc. They really shouldn't have an issue with it.

So far there hasn't been a problem. I'm doing exactly what Amazon wants of me or requires of me.

I've decided not to do anything. I'm simply visiting Peru for 40 years, which is my right as a U.S. citizen (married to a Peruvian).

I will continue to buy ebooks using the legal methods available to me. I'm not going to rock the boat and explain anything to them.
