I have about 1000 ebooks on my PRS-505 and I can't afford to add anymore to the external or internal card because the reader takes forever to restart. right now at 1000 ebooks it takes about 30-45 mintues to reload if the device restarts. After adding new titles it takes 10-15 minutes to index the new ebooks.

I've heard after 2000 ebooks the device becomes even slower...

I have 925 books on my PRS-505.

My collections cover 13 pages. Reasonable navigation time to any series or category. If I was reading a series to get to the next book I just have to press the menu button twice then select the next book.

The following 2 items were timed events:

1. I just added the 926th book using Calibre and it took only 3 minutes and 35 seconds to complete the re-indexing after removing the USB cable.

2. Just for fun I just shutdown my reader. I have set the select button in the middle of the navigation to power it down if I hold it in for 5 seconds. I just turned it back on, it took 1 minute to get past the restarting screen, then only 3 more minutes to finish its start up. I was able to press continue reading 4 minutes and 4 seconds after I turned it on.

This doesn't sound horrible to me.

PS. The other day I cleared the reader and put the 925 on from scratch. This is an estimate, but I recall it taking around 20 minutes to index all 925 books and be ready to read.

Anyway, if I wanted more books, I would definitely go with multiple SD cards holding 100 books each rather than one big SD card to hold them all.

I used to keep about 100-150 or so books on my 505. That's a huge reading list with plenty of variety for whatever mood I'm in. I don't see the sense in stuffing more books on there (for leisure reading).

In addition to illustrations, the amount of formatting and the ebook format are also a factor. Even plain text books can take up quite a bit of space.

I have the Project Gutenberg version of Silas Marner, and the original plain text file is 402kb in size. After formatting it and then saving it as a PDF formatted for my Sony Reader it grew to 1.1mb, this despite having no illustrations.

I don't worry too much about the size of an ebook. The combination of internal memory and an SD card gives me plenty of room for all of my ebooks. The main reason that I save my ebooks as PDFs, despite their large resulting size, is that I can be sure that they will appear on my reader exactly the way I want it to.
