I'm sorry, I mis-spoke (wrote). It's actually older peripherals that I need XP mode for.

My desktop computer is a bit over a year old, my netbook less than 6 months old. The laptop I use for work is the oldest at nearly 2 years. There is a piece of work equipment I use that was designed for XP, never worked with Vista but does with Win7 in XP mode.

I'm not sure about the "visualisation on the chip" stuff (I'm a mini-geek). Have you tried running the RC on your 3 year old machine?

Well Hardware-assisted virtualization (HAV) a part of the requirement for Running XP mode.

From Microsoft
Quote:
Windows Virtual PC requires processors capable of hardware-assisted virtualization with AMD-V™, Intel® VT or VIA® VT turned on in the BIOS.
While I've not tried to force an install of XP mode on that machine (Running W7 Pro) yet as I'm waiting to get the Heat sink replaced (Later Today). I'll probably try once that is done as currently that system is Overheating a lot (Which was a preexisting issue even under XP so not due to W7) and as such is a little slow and unstable.

I didn't do that under the RC (Something I'm kicking myself over) as I had a dualboot with XP at that time.

the one feature that i think windows could add that would be revolutionary would be desktop virtualization. the ability to create another instance of the operating system such that it is self contained and disposable. the reason why i think this is for security. imagine being able to create a virtual session that u could trash afterwards and nothing would affect the rest of the computer. it would really help solve the security issue on desktops...in terms of installing viruses and spyware, etc.

Sun VirtualBox is free and works quite well. I have an instance of Ubuntu on my desktop manchine. I'm not sure how licensing works for Win7 in virtual machines works though.

Windows 7 will be a great success for Microsoft. I use Debian Linux, OS X on a macbook pro and Windows and this release has me super excited about Windows for the first time in about 6-7 years.

For the last few years I've seen OS X become far superior to windows in terms of UI, stability, speed and features. Vista was a shocker, using a mac felt like being on a computer 3-4 years ahead of windows.

With this release, Windows hasn't just caught up to OS X in terms of UI, they are doing some things BETTER than OS X! So now when I use OS X I find myself wishing it had a windows 7 UI feature and when I use Windows 7 I miss OS X features.

Hopefully the next Windows release will be simlar to the recent OS X Snow Leopard release - focusing on speed and under the hood improvements. Because as much as I love the Windows interface improvements it does some tasks as fast as they were done on Windows XP. A 2009 OS needs to be faster in EVERY respect compared to an OS released in 2001.

I'd love to see windows get rid of the registry as well, and use a similar install process to OS X (simply drag and drop to install most apps, no clicking next 5-10 times). Also moving to a new disk system (which has been promised since longhorn), moving to UNIX style permissions and getting rid of this UAC mess.

I Just Tried Running XP mode on that machine, and as expected It just refuses to start, giving the message to go to BIOS to switch HAV On .

While Not unexpected as MS has been pretty clear that you need HAV to run XP mode, I was hoping that as it uses Virtual PC, it would run.

Are you saying that you're telling the whole OS to run in XP mode? I only have a few specific peripherals assigned to run in XP mode. All else runs with Windows 7 drivers.

No. The way XP mode Works, from what i've seen is that it launchs a Virtual Machine which contains a full setup of XP inside of Windows 7.

Once you get it running you can then install the specif Apps you want Apps inside it and have links to launch directly from Win7, something similar to what VMware offers in OSX, but simplified as the the VM is already ready.

What I found was that while you can install the VM, it does not launch when you try to start it unless you have a processor which has HAV enabled on it.

What I was trying to see was whether it was possible to run the XP mode, even slowly without HAV, but its not possible.

Oh, thanks for the explanation. I'm sorry it's not working for you. Do you need a new motherboard or would be easier to get a new computer?

Its a laptop, so no to the Motherboard upgrade

Its not a major issue, as I don't have that many apps that NEED WinXP, and for those that do, I could always switch it back to a Dualboot if need be.

I also have a New Macbook Pro, which I believe does support HAV, so I could always have XP Mode in the Bootcamp or just run XP in a VM.

Having this feature was a nice bonus, but not a requirement so am not that disappointing. The main reason I posted about this was that other people should be aware, especially as even some of the machines which had HAV shipped with it disabled (Looking at you Sony)
