I think Amazon should respond by putting kindles in some retail stores.
As to #1, it's unclear to me me what book pricing will be once the Nook ships and the eBook store is modified to support it. From the looks of the launch BN rushed the Nook out to position it for the holidays, but they don't have all the fine details ready yet, hence the late Nov ship date.

As to #3 I don't really see the comparison between Blockbuster and BN other than they are both B&M stores. Movies/TV on hard media is on a slow death rattle. That is clear. But Bookstores still have their purpose. There are plenty of titles I'd never buy in eFormat. In fact the only eBooks I buy are the one's I'd normally read and giveaway. Books I intend to keep I still buy in hardback. I don't think the hardback book will ever go away completely. Also Bookstores are places people like to hangout in. I never wanted to chill in a Blockbuster.

As for the Amazon's response. Short term the nook is not going to damage the Kindle, but long term Amazon better beef up its R&D dept. or license Kindle production to a real hardware maker or people will go elsewhere. The Kindle was good enough when it was the only game in town. But that is changing quickly and the Kindle must too.

Truly the real threat for the Kindle is going to be if Apple enters the market in 2010. Only Apple can make reading cool again to the masses.

On your response to my 3rd point, I agree that paper books aren't going away; however, the overall volumes would drop off if ebooks takeoff with the masses. B&N's business was formerly the low cost leader on books when they beat out the mom & pops. now amazon is cheaper. B&N was still good for people who wanted to browse or wanted convenience but now u can browse ebooks and they r more convenient. thus, i see B&N as having far too much bricks and mortar capacity for the market in the long term. they r barely profitable as it is. internet distribution decimated blockbuster's business. the same will happen to B&N.

Yes, absolutely I do. They matched the price exactly.......I think they are watching the nook closely.

Harry, look at this page. They've consolidated the US only and International K2. Now they're only selling the international version new. They'll still have the refurbished (for $219)

I see this as a direct response to the Nook. Why buy a US only product when with Amazon you can get international coverage?

Apparently the International Kindle is the only 6" Kindle for sale at Amazon. So it would be a direct competitor to the nook.

I just saw that as a result of having sold out of existing stock of the "old" Kindles.

Me too, no reason to keep two product lines going that are basically the same.

All right.

So, suddenly they have one 6" reader.

With international coverage. (well, some international coverage)

Priced the same as the BN product with only US coverage.

And this happened a couple of days after BN's announcement.

How is that not reacting positively?

I rather suspect it's the other way around - B&N "reacting" to Amazon. As I said in an earlier post, B&N are relatively unimportant when you look at the global picture, since they only sell in a single country.

Either way, it still makes the nook Amazon's rival in the U.S.

Amazon announced that they were developing a PC reader for their books.

What is irritating to me, is that all the changes to the Kindle is in response to competition from the Nook. Instead of feedback from the users.

Users have been wanting a cheaper price than $359 since they were released, they wanted a Kindle that was usable world-wide, they wanted to be able to read Kindle Books on their PC's... What is next? Folders?

I'm confused. K2 pricing dropped twice from $359 ($299 to $259) before the Nook pricing was announced (which was priced to match K2).

I've read hints of the computer component for a while, they've always wanted to go worldwide but had issues to deal with.

If Amazon starts selling K2s in brick & mortar stores, to me, that would be a major reaction to the Nook.

CNN is reporting that Amazon profits are up 69%, with the Kindle being the major reason. The Kindle is their number 1 seller across ALL merchandise categories by units sold and by dollar sales.

Amazon has every incentive to put huge resources into keeping the Kindle competitive. I own a Sony 505 and download books from several libraries all the time. The Kindle's got let me do that at the very least before I'll consider buying one.
