Cards draw power, so either will use more power than if no card is inserted. I don't know whether SD cards use more than Memory Sticks

These have worked out well - they are Class 4. They seem to work fine - there is a slight delay, but I don't really notice it. I am not sure about power drain, but it isn't noticeable so far. The truth is, I have more than enough space with the 512 MB built in (I don't have any music on there - the kids took all the headphones). I could live with the 512MB fine with some minor management of content. The only time I can imagine I would need more is if I were traveling for a month or so and didn't bring my laptop. I don't really read all that quickly (a lot of my material consists of journal articles and PDF files for my Masters, which isn't light reading).

The cards are handy for organizing things, though.

My thoughts, and this is if you're a somewhat avid photographer, is to generally buy the largest and fastest card you can...within reason. Why? Maybe you're on vacation, you have the reader and your digital camera. You've shot so many photos the card in your camera is now full. Well, you should have a backup of your books, and if not for shame, so use the card that's in your reader and continue on with vacation photos. I also tend to recycle cards. Faster and larger ones will go in devices I use more often and when those are replaced with even faster and larger, the older will go down the line to another device.

That said, I don't even have a card in my 600.
