If you like the device, there's always the option of taking the case apart, use a citrus-based solvent to remove the rubber shell (so you won't hurt the plastic), and jsut sand/prime the case and paint it yourself.

Or just peel it, till it is all Nude.

The Slate Blue looks pretty good.

BTW The Upper right arrow has now worn completely away from page turns

After hearing about all the other problems, I would rather have one that Works, and I can use now.

Ahh, I was under the impression that the V3 also had the rubber coating. This means that it may not be due to US regulatory 'standards' at all, but to Hanlin's inability to field-test their product correctly before releasing it to the public or passing it on to their distributors.

All I know is that I have been out of contact with my device for 2 weeks for an exchange, and now it's halfway through a second 2 week separation. Astak paid shipping both time, both ways. Thats 4 shipping charges Astak is soaking up because of the manufacturer's negligence. Hopefully there is a contractual clause that will allow
Astak to be reimbursed for these fees.

I prefer a more pale slate blue myself. If my new one begins to shed like my bearded dragon, it'll be time for it to undergo a treatment.

It's a shame and I feel your frustration. But that is absolutely what everyone with a defective device needs to do here...most of you pre-ordered and in good faith, paid in full as much as a month before receiving your device. Now there are enough here who have been through multiple returns and have been subjected to multiple spin excuses....and now the latest is to blame US CUSTOMS REGS? Good gawd what a specious argument...I would offer than production delays were pushing the 30-day pre-order delivery requirements by CC companies so they sent a dozen workers with cans of Krylon to paint your devices just to get them out the door before Astak was in violation of the 30-day shipping/delivery requirements of their Merchant Card account terms, which would put not only cost them in returns in to play, but also penalties for each instance of failure to deliver.

There has yet to be a provable and documented reason for this issue...so, were it me, the device is not "superior" enough in terms of functionality or reliability to justify not voting with your wallet and seeking out a 5" device by another mfg which is NOT made by, who is it, Jinkie? I mean it is not as if all of this is Astak's fault, I think it could not be...then again we will never know for certain.

I do feel badly for those who trusted Astak to deliver as promised but I do not believe any of what had been posted by them with respect to these issues. But then again I have no "sense of ownership" that comes from buy a device and the denial of the reality when chronic issues continue even when information that the "...2nd Shipment is PERFECT..." posted directly from Astak.

EDIT

It seems to be affecting the Mini as well. So they must be doing something different between the v5 and the v3?

I think Id rather have a solid mottled plastic shell than the rubber coating. At least it will not be prone to peeling or ripping. Maybe they can do this for the next batch or version.
I think the BeBook Mini was released after the Astak Pocket Pro. This problem could potentially be an issue for the Hanlin V5, however under that brand they are not really predominate in the english speaking world, hence we don't hear about it. Part of me thinks the issue could be caused by sweat, as I noticed first time using mine that my hands felt rather sweaty while using it. I havent had an issue with mine *fingers crossed*, however it is not the end of the world if it does peel a little - I prefer functionality over form...besides all new toys get roughed a little at some point, my phone is scratched, my new car is scratch (damn parking lots).

Griff, your idea of a solid plastic shell does sound good if this rubber coating is an ongoing issue. Perhaps couple the new shell with the option of a rubber sleeve like the Nintendo Wii controllers and Apple iPhones.

I really think the OP might want to change the title of this thread given the evidence to the contrary. Just so no one is mislead.

My unit hit San Pablo on Sunday at 4pm, and should have been sent to San Jose that night for a Monday delivery. For some reason, though, the shipment to San Jose was rescheduled for today. Which means it was in the San Jose holding pen for a day and a half. As of now, it's out for delivery to Astak. Depending on the turnaround, I am hoping that they have the replacement ready to send out once the unit is received.

It's looking like I won't get my unit this week, unless there's a priority shipment included.
