Thank you all for your replies.

I am not so sure that the return policy applies to purchasers from UK. I will however check it out. The sony 600 will go on ebay eventually as the glare drives me mad, Ipod/iphone kindle application again not yet available in UK.

I will try to find someone who has been sucessful with this problem and see if they would be willing to help.
Once again thanks

It's really not hard to exchange (non MobileRead Forum) email addresses and send the information that way.

But still, could a moderator please indicate whether sending the information through MobileRead private messages might be frowned upon?

What people do with private messages is precisely that - private. Mods do NOT have access to peoples' private messages.

The point is not to break the law, not to be complicit. Anything posted or exchanged on a forum such as this is to some extent ultimately the responsibility of the owner and moderators. All information posted or stored is potentially available to that group.

There is a clear statement of not allowing posting of specific information about breaking DRM etc. My take on that is that yes, it's officially frowned on.

Just wanted to add that if you're in the UK, both Waterstones and Borders have the Sony 600 on display next to the smaller 300 that does not have a touch screen. Although you'd want a bigger reader, seeing them next to each other should help you decide whether a basic (non-touch) e-ink screen would be for you. I haven't quite decided which reader I want yet, but it was seeing the 2 Sonys side by side that made me sure that the Touch wasn't for me because of the glare issue.

I've not seen anything to suggerst that there's a significant difference between Kindle. Sony 505, Bebook, Cybook etc in screen quality so you if you're happy with the quality you may as well choose a reader based on other functionality.

Thank you.
I have ordered the international kindle and will get rid of the 600 once I have sorted out the books on there.
I believe from here that if I don't like it I will be able to return it. If I had been able to compare when I bought the 600 I would not have purchased it, hindsight is a great thing!!!

I'm in the UK and found that the Sony 300 screen is similar to the 505 (which I own). If I had to replace the 505, I'd buy a 300 I think, as I don't really use the SD card anyway.

See how you go Belynda but it is worth a go. If the Kindle screen is like the 600, I found that quite fuzzy round the edges, somewhat like an old Palm Pilot Screen.

It is quite easy to do the unlocking using the cabbages code.

There isn't. All the 6" devices use the same screen, as do all the 5" devices. The 5" screen has a slightly higher pixel density than the 6" (200dpi against 167dpi), so may appear a little sharper.

The kindle is NOT like the 600, it is not touch-sensitive. It is the same screen, same manufacturer as the 505 (as far as I know).

The 600 uses the same screen at the 505 and the K1 & K2. The touch part of the 600 is a touch layer on top of the screen.

505 and the Kindle do share the same screen. The 700 and 600 do as well, but those two have extra layers over the screen to add the touch sensitive ability. The fuzziness and glare issues are directly related to this extra layer.

The 300's screen is similar, same company and all, just slightly different, mostly stuff for reduction in size from 6" to 5". Same resolution 800x600), but higher DPI (200 compared to 166).

if you have not yet been able to work out how to strip the DRM from ePub, I would suggest keeping the 600 and not getting a Kindle. Otherwise, all those eBooks won't be very useful to you as the Kindle does not handle ePub at all.

...
True, but the touch layer distorts/changes the readability.
