I will definitely check back with any of you again if it doesn't work.. you all have been very kind and patient. I have to mention this, mobileread is an amazing site .. people are so very helpful, kind and very patient, especially with people like me who are totally (duh)

Hi Guys, I'm interested in going down the networking route as I'm about to take delivery of a netbook to use when away from home. I hadn't thought of networking it with my laptop. If I make changes to my Calibre data base on my netbook when away from home (eg adding new books), will the two databases synch when I come back and reconnect the netbook into the database?

No.

You either have to work off a shared database or copy the amended database over the old one.

Having said that if you copy the metadata.db file over you could use a program like RichCopy to sync the remaining files. RichCopy can be setup to only copy amended files which is significantly faster than copying every file.

Sharing files and/or directories is very easy with Microsoft Live Mesh. I use it all the time to sync data between 5 different computers. Make a change on one of them and it automagically appears on the other ones.

Have you thought of using Remote Desktop Connection or VNC to remote control your desktop, thus eliminating 2 databases?
You can even remote/share a "drive".
NB Be sure you have strong passwords in place on your network (especially if more than 1 computer behind the Firewall) and all the latest security patches.
