These days with so many people having web-enabled smartphones, it seems like an odd product. Like Hellmark said, $50 more and you have a refurb Kindle 1 that can do a lot more. People rip on readers for being unitaskers. This thing's functionality is even narrower.

Yes but paper encylopedias are recognised as a credible reference for academic work, wikipedia (at least at my Uni) is not recognised as credible. Handy device for accessing general knowledge but IMHO not worth much else, certainly not $99 when for $199 you can get a full blown e-reader with much more flexibility.

To me it reads like a toy product with no real use or purpose.

To a person not involved with academia, but intelligent enough to not take the first thing they read about something as authoritative it can reasonably be as useful as a 20 volume leather bound encyclopedia set costing thousands.

But you do make a good point.

The picture showed it being used by an elementary-school aged child. As a resource for 8-14 year olds, this could be very useful--and it looks sturdy enough to survive use by them, where most e-readers or netbooks cannot.

Actually a micro-SDHC card with a capacity of 4 Gig or more. I put an article in our wiki WikiReader. It looks like the original palm screen at about 3" and 160x160 pixel.

You can! Move to the word. Hit the little enter button (symbol is that angled arrow) then hit the right arrow til you get a menu to choose wikipedia. Ta-da.

Of course, if you have used the browser on the Kindle you'll know it's painfully slow. This is no exception. But at least you won't have to type that word or go through as many button presses, I guess. Also you can hit the back button to get back to your page (takes like 5 screens back but still..)

If this is an OpenMoko project, those of you clamoring for it to be "hacked" into a general purpose reader... well you should look into what OpenMoko is about

In summary: No hacking will be necessary. At least, not the usual sense of the word. Unless OpenMoko has completely changed their attitudes, every single aspect of this device will be open, from the hardware designs all the way to the software running on it.

OK - I'm sort of a encyclopedia/dictionary/wiki fiend - so I ordered one. Will provide a hands-on review later this week.

I agree, although the easiest way to get ebooks onto the device may be to convert them into a MediaWiki wiki. See the comments to WikiReader: OpenMoko's "Project B".

Barring copyright infringements, this would be the perfect device to put "Don't Panic" in large friendly letters on the start-up screen.

All the knowledge of the universe, err that has been Wiki-ed, in the palm of your hand. Towels sold separately.

Next: Babelfish!

Very interested in buying one, but I first want to see some more specs. According to the CEO there will be more news this week.
I hope this device will be as open as the openmoko phone, then we might see some developers turning this into a great multiple format ebook reader.

Some people enjoy reading wiki just to learn, and don't need it for reference. Also, a smart writer won't cite wiki, but rather cite that which wiki cites.

I still have interest in it, because of the hackability, but I suspect most people they're aiming at won't be hacking it.
